Duties & Responsibilities Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Involvement in the Office of Student Life, and working closely with the Dean of Students, the Director for Special Projects position is a one-year term appointment to manage special projects and provide interim coverage for vacancies within the Office of Student Life at Harvard College.

Unrecognized Single Gender Social Organizations (USGSOs)

  • Provide staff support to the faculty committee reviewing the Harvard College Policy on Membership in USGSOs

  • Communications – working closely with the Associate Director of Communications for the FAS ensure timely communications to key constituents regarding the existing policy, the work of the committee, and other updates as appropriate.

  • Convene meetings of the leadership of USGSOs and other social organizations during the fall term (include graduate and undergraduate leadership).

  • Make logistical arrangements for meetings, town halls, and other committee related activities. Document committee meetings by taking minutes

  • Guide the implementation of the policy by ensuring systems, processes, and relevant materials are developed

  • Collaborate with OSAPR/AODS/Title IX Coordinator to develop resources and trainings that can be offered to social organizations

  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Life to transition oversight and support for social organizations to the OSL Involvement Team by late fall 2017

  • Family Weekends and Wintersession Planning (while Director is on Leave):

  • Responsible for planning and implementing the College's Parent Programs while the Director is on Leave. Work closely with the Freshman Dean's Office to manage the design and implementation of Freshman Parents Weekend and the Parent Lounge and Resource Fair on move-in day; Collaborates with the residential Houses to design and implement Junior Parents Weekend;

  • Coordinates with numerous offices and departments across the University including Dining Services, Athletics, and academic departments; Works with President's Office, Office of the Dean of the College, and faculty presenters to craft and support all parents programs; Manages all communications with parents regarding parent weekends;

  • Plans and implements Wintersession programs; creates and coordinates the programming and services offered to undergraduates between the end of the fall term and the beginning of the spring term; Manages a $500,000 budget; Collaborates with academic departments and campus-wide administrative units to implement programs.

  • Serve as primary contact for parent/emergency contact and coordinates all communications with parents and emergency contacts, including but not limited to email correspondence, program materials, and website

  • Assess the College’s approach to HFAI students related to experience gaps (e.g. winter/spring break meals and housing, textbook purchases, winter coat fund, use of startup funding, winter and summer experiences and funding, commencement expenses, launch needs)

  • House Programming Funds

  • Support Houses in use of funding from the Dean’s Office to support the following priorities

  • Student initiated programming ($7,500)

  • Student-Faculty Engagement ($5,000)

  • Central House Contingency Funds ($10,000

  • Supervise Graduate Fellow

  • Other duties as assigned -

  • Attend the Committee on Student Life

  • USGSO Committee

  • The OSL frequently has initiatives that require coordination. The Director for Special Projects will implement projects as assigned by the Dean of Students

    Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of administrative experience, preferably in a higher education or non-profit setting.

    Additional Qualifications Facility with a variety of technology tools, experience managing budgets, ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and to oversee high profile events, strong communication skills, knowledge of student affairs, and analytical skills.
