Shire Commercial Procurement Lead, Commercial Operations in Lexington, Massachusetts
The candidate will be responsible for any one of the categories and sub-categories that span Commercial Operations Procurement which include Sales Force Operations, Marketing Operations, Commercial Learning and Development, and Operation Excellence and Analytics.
The candidate will be responsible for partnering with Senior Directors, Directors, and functional leads to drive strategic sourcing and supply management.
Category Knowledge: Knowledge of functions related centralized marketing and sales operations positioned to provide operational excellence to the brands, in support of marketing initiatives.
Strategic Sourcing: Proven expertise with the various sourcing tools and analytical methods commonly practiced and used within a world-class Global Procurement organization.
Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated / proven typical skills and knowledge required to contribute to a Global Procurement organization.
Span of Control: The position is global in scope and be expected to manage a total expenditure of $80M to $120M. The individual must understand how to review a global strategy through the lens of a local market/country to ensure the implementation meets the local business requirements.
As procurement influence is expanding within Shire, the role will need to work closely with the functional business units to create value added category strategies. The candidate will need to have strong interpersonal, communications and problem solving skills. They should display a passion for strategic sourcing, category management and operational procurement.

Category Management & Leadership
Personally develops, leads, and manages larger sub-categories. Develops an end-to-end category strategy, mapping out the current landscape and defining an improvement plan for the near, mid and long-term to stimulate interest from and engagement with stakeholders. Activities such as: market research, demand management, specification development, spend analytics, category strategy development, business case development, negotiation, E-Procurement & E-auctions, stakeholder engagement. Ensures indirect reports utilization of established tools/systems & adherence to policies. Feed success stories into overall procurement communications.
Demonstrating value delivery to a target audience of Sr. Dir / Dir level stakeholders to reinforce client-side buy-in. Be able to engage leaders to gain insights and perspective. As the Procurement Leadership Team is responsible for business-wide engagement, this role is equally responsible for the credibility and reputation of Procurement as a value-adding team. “Selling” Procurement is a key part of this role. Specifically where the business is not engaged, or late, finds ways of improving engagement and develops a plan of action. Understand business area needs strategies and priorities and service accordingly. Ability to address urgent needs of the business effectively and efficiently. Ensure Procurement is a commercial asset and not just a compliance function. Champion and enact pan-business sourcing to leverage Shire’s buying power. Show the business how to make their budgets go further or get more for less. Be knowledgeable in best procurement practice for the category (sub-categories) and be able to explain to the client why and how this adds value. Show the client the value through compelling business case development, including capturing category-wide demand to leverage opportunity across Shire. Co-develop and execute sourcing strategies with the business, expertly advising and guiding the process to the best-fit approach, tactics and tools (e.g. outcome-based specifications, RFP/RFI/RFQ builds, E-auctions, KPI/SLA development). Meet regularly with stakeholders to ensure alignment & solicit feedback. Demonstrate Shire values in all relationships (including suppliers).
Processes, Metrics & Execution
Track progress against objectives; refine and develop audience-specific updates. Use market research to ensure that Shire stays abreast of latest market cost/value/innovation developments per category. Work in collaboration with Global Internal Audit and other functions to ensure compliance to policies and audit remediation. Create, prioritize and plan a pipeline of opportunities to deliver the saving objectives (approved by the Finance Business Partner).
Enable Shire to get the best out of its suppliers by working in partnership with them for mutual good business. Help the business conduct post contract management (PCM) and facilitate supplier relationship management (SRM) with key suppliers. Enable Procurement, the business and suppliers conduct business ethically, and within the Company’s Anti Bribery and Corruption and FCPA guidelines. Alert the leadership to any improper practice.
Education & Experience Requirements
BA or BS required; MBA preferred. Professional certifications are a plus (e.g. ISM, IPMM or MCIPS).
8 to 15 years of industry experience.
Demonstrated ability of working with and managing people/teams in a complex, changing environment to deliver value-added results to the organization.
Demonstrated ability of end-to-end category management & change from a tactical fulfillment service provider to business partner status.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and influence others.
Experience preferred in managing culturally diverse international projects or global teams.
Demonstrated ability in understanding human and organizational behavior dynamics.
Mastery of functional expertise and role.

Knowledge of multiple spending patterns, supplier processes, business processes across the company must be employed to effectively make decisions representing internal clients and the relationships with Shire’s suppliers.
