The Wellesley College Child Study Center is a laboratory preschool associated with the Department of Psychology at Wellesley College. The school, one of the first laboratory preschools in the United States, was established in 1913 to provide an exemplary educational environment for young children and to offer a high quality setting for research and training in child development, with a child-centered, play-based curriculum consistent with principles of developmentally appropriate practice. The school has a professional teaching staff of 3 Lead Teachers, 3 Assistant Teachers, and approximately 50 undergraduate student teachers. Ten to twenty research projects are conducted at the center every year, and the school manages approximately 3,000 visitors per year (including researchers, undergraduates doing coursework, professionals, and parents). Each year, 44 children are enrolled. The school runs for 9 months of the year, and offers a three-hour morning program five days per week and an extended day option two days per week. The Faculty Director of the Child Study Center has full responsibility for the operations of the school. The CSC is a model early childhood program for ages 2-5, a learning environment for the training of undergraduate students, and a research laboratory setting where students and families participate in academic research projects. The Faculty Director supports the children, families and staff of the school, maintains the excellence of the educational program, and oversees all administrative functions, including admissions, budget, hiring, and faculty development, . As a member of the Psychology Department, the Faculty Director facilitates the operation of the CSC as an active laboratory for undergraduate education and faculty research and works directly with undergraduates doing independent and thesis research. The Faculty Director will teach one course per year in the Education Department, supervise student interns and advise students seeking licensure. The Faculty Director reports directly to the Dean of Academic Affairs regarding the administration of the school.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum degree requirement is a M.A. in Early Childhood Education or a related field; post-Masters work and/or Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field is preferred. Director I certification according to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. Previous laboratory preschool experience and college teaching experience preferred. Familiarity with standard research protocols and experimental design. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work with constituents of many ages. Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills. Experience with fundraising for private institutions. Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment.
