Who We Are: The Department of Conversation & Recreation (DCR) is steward of one of the largest state parks systems in the country. Equally, EOEEA works with energy consumers, power companies, clean energy providers and farmers to delicately balance the interaction with environmental protection laws and regulations while being a cornerstone for our economic prosperity. * *Job Opening: The Department of Conservation is seeking a dedicated and motivated student to assist in various engineering projects aimed at preserving and enhancing our natural and built environments with DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering. These contracted positions offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in construction engineering, facility maintenance, project management, infrastructure management, and design within the realm of conservation. About the Division of Design and Engineering: Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E’s mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR’s facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change. Position Information: Contracted Student Internship: Shared Use Path and Greenway Planner Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA Start/End Date: 01/12/25-6/21/25 Salary Rate: $24.00 per hour Weekly Hours: 37.5 hours Number of Openings: 1 position Applications will be accepted until December 1, 2024, and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. Position Summary: The DCR Trails and Greenways section requests a co-op to assist with shared use path design and construction in the spring of 2025. The section is currently managing the design, construction, and repair of shared use paths in a variety of locations in Massachusetts. The coop would work closely with team members to advance this work, in the process learning about shared use path design, environmental permitting and monitoring, public construction bidding, construction management, and more. Spring 2025 projects are likely to include construction of the Massachusetts Central Rail Trail (MCRT) in Sudbury and Hudson, rehabilitation of the Linden Street bridge on the MCRT in Waltham, repairs to the Emerald Necklace pathway system in Jamaica Plain, and design of improvements to the Southwest Corridor pathway system in Boston. The co-op will be part of a team of DCR employees who enjoy building—and using—trails and greenways of all kinds and will also have a chance to collaborate with colleagues at MassDOT as part of an inter-agency team. Preferred Qualifications: * Currently enrolled in a degree program in engineering, construction management, or a related field. * Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. * Willingness to learn and acquire new skills. * Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. * Valid driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation to and from DCR and non-DCR sites.
