*Position Summary *

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Highway Operations Summer Internship program is for students enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program for the Fall of 2019. It provides interns with hands-on experience in Statewide Highway Operations.

As an Operations intern, you will gain real world experience in the front line operations work that keeps our roads safe every day. Duties include going on site visits, working on exciting and significant project and delivering quality work that has a lasting influence on operations throughout the Commonwealth. This opportunity will allow you to see how the professional workforce carries out the important work of traffic incident management, emergency response planning, intelligent traffic systems, accident recovery, winter road treatment & snow removal operations, and fleet and equipment operations, and more.

The Operations Summer Internship Program typically runs 12 weeks from June through August. The standard work week is full-time Monday through Friday and start times will vary depending upon placement.

Operations programs accepting 2019 Summer Interns:

_MassDOT Highway Division Sign Shop_

Location: 4 Presidential Way, Woburn, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • Assisting in making signs using Gerber printing technologies

  • Assist in operational activities: stocking, tracking inventory, organization of records, data collection

_Snow & Ice Operations_

Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Assist with updating procedures, guidelines, manuals (Word, Excel)

  • Data Entry (SIMS, Excel)

  • Assist with mapping Snow Plow routes (GIS)

_Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS)_

Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Support the ITS section in collecting, analyzing and entering data

  • Reviewing design plans, developing reports

  • Exploring activities at other jurisdictions, and developing findings and reports.

_Accident Recovery Program_

Location: 185 Kneeland Street, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Communicate with insurance companies

  • Analyze reports and supporting documents

  • Enter program information in database

  • Participate in weekly case review meetings

_Highway Operations Center/Traffic Incident Management_

Location: 50 Massport Haul Road, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

  • Develop reports and presentations around issues

  • Conduct research, recommend program adjustments, identify new guidance issue

  • Develop findings and reports to the Director

_Fleet and Equipment Operations_

Location: 668 South Avenue, Weston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Analyze issues and conduct field investigations

  • Gather information & data on critical assets

  • Develop findings and reports and identify new guidance

_Fleet and Equipment Operations _

Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Analyze issues and conduct field investigations

  • Gather information & data on critical assets

  • Develop findings and reports and identify new guidance

_Highway Maintenance & Structures _

Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA

Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • Conduct research and field investigations

  • Develop finding and reports related to specific activities and issues

  • Recommend program adjustments and identify new guidance
