Job Summary

Under the direction of the University Health Services (UHS) Medical Director, the Assistant Medical Director provides leadership and oversite of the Urgent Care Center in accordance with the regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Emergency Medicine. This position provides urgent care services for students, faculty/staff, and others eligible for health care at UMass Amherst.

Essential Functions

  • Provides physician oversight to implement, evaluate, and guide activities and policies of UHS urgent care center which provides care to students and other eligible patients. Develops strategies that ensure a high quality of emergency patient care.

  • Responsible for selection, training and supervising of all personnel that report directly or indirectly to the Assistant Medical Director. Oversees credentialing for emergency care professionals.

  • Provide urgent care services to patients during regular and evening hours. Responsible for timely entry in medical records and appropriate referral to other providers. Performs procedures appropriate to training. Orders medications including controlled substances.

  • Maintains a program of continuing emergency medical education as required by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and includes bi-annual CPR review.

  • Participates in staff meetings, committees, and quality improvement activities.

  • May coordinate a major program activity as assigned by the Director of UHS for Medical Care.

  • Understands and contributes to implementation of department and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multi-cultural environment.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • M.D. or D.O. degree and licensure for the practice of medicine in Massachusetts or licensed in another state with Massachusetts licensure at time of appointment.

  • Board certified in Emergency Medicine and three (3) years of residency training.

  • Over five (5) years of progressively responsible emergency patient care and program leadership.

  • Administrative skills to assume a leadership role in directing a Medical Staff.

  • Qualified for a local hospital staffing privilege, either as a courtesy or active staff member.

  • Registration as a controlled substance practitioner in Massachusetts and with the FDA at time of appointment.

  • Insurable by the Massachusetts Medical Professional Insurance Association or equivalent insurer.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical university primary health care clinic environment activity.

Additional Details

This position is designated as essential personnel.

Work Schedule

  • 40hrs/week with rotation of evening, weekend, and holidays.

  • Regular weekday hours during academic year (open until 8 pm), share call and weekend clinic hours in rotation with other physicians.

  • No hospital responsibilities.

Salary Information

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience.
