Inspect electrical installations within city buildings to ensure compliance with Massachusetts Electrical Codes and the safety of the public. Review construction plans; Investigate code compliance and wiring complaints; Issue electrical permits and citations; Work collaboratively with Town departments and other stakeholders to resolve wiring issues. Job Summary: The Town of Amherst Part-Time Electrical Inspector inspects buildings to ensure compliance with Massachusetts electrical codes and other related laws and regulations promulgated for the safety of the public. Responsible for reviewing construction plans, and issuing electrical permits, stop work orders, correction notices, and citations. Interprets and provides guidance regarding electrical codes, and works with multiple stakeholders to resolve wiring related problems. This position works independently for approximately 10 hours per week (mostly at UMASS), and backs-up the full-time inspector during vacations. Flexible schedule. Major Duties: 1. Performs inspections of electrical installations within buildings and reviews construction plans to ensure compliance with Massachusetts Electrical Codes. Schedules inspections on a daily basis and maintains records of work completed. 2. Issues electrical permits to qualified persons upon receipt of application and verification of insurance coverage. Maintains database of electrical permits and related insurance information. 3. Contacts Power Company for connection of services upon inspection approval. Communicates with Power Company in the event of an emergency or to disconnect services when there is imminent danger. 4. Responds to complaints regarding code compliance and illegal/defective wiring. Investigates complaints and resolves or refers to appropriate persons. 5. Responds to emergencies when requested in order to determine if electrically-related. 6. Works to resolve wiring related problems discovered through inspections and conducts research as necessary to determine solutions. 7. Works with other town departments as required (e.g., Fire Department, Police Department, Engineering Department, Health Department, Conservation Department, Public Works, Department of Public Facilities and other State and Federal Agencies). 8. Responds to questions from the public, other departments, and other agencies regarding electrical codes and Town projects. Interprets codes and issues Code Interpretations. 9. Enforces codes by issuing stop work orders, correction notices, and citations. Assists in searching for resolutions and follows up to ensure remediation. Authorizes and issues certificates and permits as appropriate. 10. Explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding applicable codes to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and other interested parties. 11. Maintains knowledge of all applicable codes and regulations and any changes (e.g., by reading pertinent materials and attending seminars and peer associations) and keeps abreast of technological and other industry changes. 12. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
