Job Summary

The Manager of Catering provides management of the UMass Catering Department and all-alcoholic beverage sales and services. Ensures a high level of service for guests. Oversees marketing, operations and fiscal responsibilities, and establishes long lasting community relationships that make an impact on the success of the department.

Essential Functions

  • Direct all daily operational aspects of the catering services, including staff supervision and development, menu implementation, marketing and promotions, food, and beverage quality performance, and "no error" in service delivery.

  • Plan and administer annual budget. Monitor the daily financial status of all assigned areas, recognize and act to remediate any variations from projected goals. Use benchmark (KPI) to measure the business weekly. Work closely with management to prepare monthly forecasts and departmental budgets, ensuring accuracy and achievement. Develop annual business and marketing plans for the department. Institute and maintain policies and procedures necessary to determine profitable product and labor costs.

  • Establish and maintain rapport with clients, prior to, during and post event, exceeding their expectations and encouraging repeat business.

  • Play an active role in the local community through associations, memberships, and involvement. Be an ambassador of the Catering Department within the local community.

  • Maintain formal and informal communication with customers through comment cards, electronic surveys, catering open house, year-in-review, customer focus groups, etc.

  • Develop new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvement and operational efficiency; develop/modify menus for Catering.

  • Conduct inspections of the facilities as needed. Ensure a clean and sanitary operation.

  • Coordinate necessary training for subordinates, to ensure opportunity for growth and success in their current roles and future careers.

  • Participate and/or lead necessary meetings with the sales department, facilities department and any department that may intersect with catering and event operations.

  • Ensure that alcoholic beverage service and risk liability are controlled at all times by adhering to Massachusetts State Liquor Laws as well as the Campus Center Beverage Policy.

  • Perform other food and beverage activities and duties within dining services as requested.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in hospitality industry or related area and five (5) years progressive catering experience in a hotel or restaurant environment OR Associate's Degree preferably from a culinary school/program and 7 years progressive catering experience in a hotel or restaurant environment OR Ten (10) years of progressive catering experience in a hotel or restaurant environment.

  • ServSafe Sanitation Certificate required or obtained within the first 3 months of hire.

  • Alcohol Serving Certificate required or obtained within the first 3 months of hire.

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and variable schedules.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems and Delphi Systems.

  • Must have reliable transportation as local travel will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in hospitality, marketing, business, or related field.

  • Experience on a large university campus.

  • Experience in working in a unionized environment.

  • Experience in the public sector.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Requires the ability to balance, carry, push, pull, stand, bend, driving, reach, sit and travel to other campuses.

Additional Details

This position is designated as essential personnel.

Work Schedule

  • M-F 8:30 – 5PM; Position will include evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

  • 37.5 hours
