About UMass Amherst
UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.
Job Description
The research fellow will perform 2D CFD simulations using OpenFOAM or Nalu-Wind to evaluate and improve unsteady airfoil aerodynamic (UAA) models in wind turbine design tools like OpenFAST. They will analyze UAA models under both normal operating and extreme idling conditions, focusing on time-varying lift and drag forces during translation and pitching motions. Their work will validate models using CFD, experimental data, and open-source datasets, while addressing gaps in predicting stall-induced vibrations and aerodynamic loads during deep stall scenarios.
Requirements
MS in STEM (mechanical engineering, computational, physics)
