Sensata Technologies, Inc. Counsel, Patents and IP Attorney in Attleboro, Massachusetts
We are seeking a strategic, business-minded and self-motivated IP attorney with an electrical or mechanical engineering background and 2 5 years of intellectual property experience to advise and serve as a trusted strategic partner to a variety of internal teams. This position will assist in managing the company's intellectual property portfolio, including domestic and international patents, and will work closely with the company's product development teams.

General Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on valuable intellectual property rights such as patents, technical data, trade secrets, licenses, copyrights and trademarks.
In close collaboration with other IP team members, strategically develop our worldwide patent portfolio, including directing and managing domestic and foreign outside counsel to prepare and prosecute patent applications in a diverse and growing technological field.
Review and analyze third-party patents and prepare, or oversee the preparation of, freedom-to-operate opinions.
Conduct prior art and patent searching.
Analyze patent portfolio to make maintenance and annuity fee decisions.
Provide protection of the client’s intellectual property by securing intellectual property rights and patent protection.
Oversee all matters relating to invention management and preparing patent applications on inventions.
Advise on research and development activities for the identification of inventions.
Experience / Qualifications
Technical background in electrical or mechanical engineering.
J.D. from a respected law school with excellent academic credentials and admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office with 2 5 years of experience preparing and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications.
Must be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands.
Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation.
Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results.
Strong personal and professional ethical values and integrity.
Holds self-accountable to achieving goals and standards.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers.
Additional Responsibilities
Assisting in all areas related to the company's global patent and trademark portfolio.
Ensuring that company patent filings and maintenance decisions are aligned with global business strategy.
Working closely with product development teams to ensure that sufficient ideas and Invention disclosures are generated; training and development of engineers on IP laws/requirements.
Ensuring that patent filings are of high quality on commercially significant inventions by working with research and development, business managers and marketing.
Overseeing the preparation of high-quality patent applications, efficiently advancing prosecution of pending patent applications, and managing global patent portfolio to ensure that meaningful protection aligned with business objectives is obtained.
Working closely with other lawyers in addressing mixed intellectual property/general legal issues.
Working with the company's Patent Committee.
Managing outside counsel and vendors in all appropriate areas of coverage to provide legal services in a cost-effective manner within budgetary expectations.
Assisting the legal department's efforts in the preparation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures relevant to areas of coverage.
Performing other special assignments, strategic projects or duties as needed.
Additional Job Requirements:
J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school; with electrical or mechanical engineering degree
Licensed to practice law and in good standing, registered to practice before the USPTO.
2 or more years of intellectual property experience.
Developed sense of judgment, risk management skills and ability to balance business needs, regulatory obligations and reputational risks in an objective, practical way; demonstrated ability to both grasp the "big picture" and attend to details.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced business environment and drive complex projects to completion.
Highly effective written and verbal communications skills; ability to communicate and relate at all levels of the organization.
Experience in-house at a US multinational and/or at a top-tier law firm is preferred.
Ability to handle substantial work volume and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Self-starter with a team spirit and an accountable working style.
