The Electronic Systems Innovation Center is a leader in applying cutting edge technologies to solve the nation’s toughest problems. The Advanced Maritime Technologies department, in the Electronic Systems Innovation Center, specializes in inventing, prototyping, analyzing, testing, and integrating the next-generation oceanic and acoustic systems for our sponsors to demonstrate the possible, reduce risk in Programs of Record (PoR), bring innovative new solutions to solve challenges of national importance, and provide subject matter expertise with hands-on experience.

Job Description:

The Advanced Maritime Technologies department manager is responsible for all aspects of leading a growing and innovative work program focused on the defense and private sector interests in the oceans. The oceans make up 71% of the Earth’s surface and play an integral role in our national, economic, and climate security. MITRE Labs is working across all MITRE FFRDC’s to strategically align outcomes to enable whole-of-nation solutions driving to accelerate actionable results in the Blue Tech space.

This requisition seeks to find a Department Manager to lead the growing BlueTech aligned department working at the intersection of national security and public sector priorities, focused on enabling whole-of-nation solutions that improve our understanding of the world’s oceans. The successful candidate must be a strong technical leader who can define and lead initiatives, manage a diverse workforce, and have leadership skills to achieve specific outcomes in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.

The candidate will help to align MITRE’s research initiatives and its direct work program to enable larger scale, integrated, innovative solutions, and partner with organizations and leaders within the sponsor community, and across industry and international partners as appropriate. The candidate must be able to oversee various initiatives and to lead interactions between senior stakeholders and MITRE on those initiatives to drive change and enable outcomes.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of the Electronic Systems Innovation Center, and will have the following additional responsibilities:

  • Creating, communicating, and executing a department strategy that encompasses the diverse technical capabilities of the department and aligns with the Innovation Center strategy. Ensuring that the department is growing its footprint in research and cutting-edge technologies.

  • Advancing the department’s capabilities through innovation, external partnering, and work program application in alignment with Division strategy

  • Hiring, developing, and retaining world-class staff, by leveraging strategic goal setting, project staffing, and training opportunities

  • Fostering an environment of connection and belonging, with a focus on inclusion and diversity

  • Developing the next generation of leadership: thought leaders, project leaders, and people leaders

  • Collaborating across Innovation Centers, Program Divisions, and external stakeholders to provide cross-cutting and impactful solutions

  • Educating MITRE project leaders and sponsors on department capabilities, expertise, and impact

  • Partnering with work programs to shape impactful work that benefits our sponsors and users and to match department staff with meaningful and technically relevant work

  • Ensuring that department staff performance and compensation management activities are fair and transparent

  • Responding to requests for information about the department and its technical capabilities

  • Plans, develops, and oversees a portion of the Division’s sponsor strategic outcomes

  • Is a key leader in developing new S&T work within MITRE’s FFRDCs as well as other new business opportunities

  • Ensures MITRE Blue Tech Lab supporting strategic needs, maintained, and is staffed appropriately with qualified individuals

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • 12+ years of related job experience with at least 3 years of supervisory/management experience

  • Demonstrated technical experience in one or more disciplines related to maritime and acoustic systems.

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical background and experience in Ocean Engineering, Signal Processing, Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, Oceanography, and/or Ocean Physics

  • Demonstrated ability to hire and grow an organization

  • Master’s degree in related field preferred
