Job Description:

The Advanced Maritime and Acoustic Technologies Department (L156) in the MITRE Labs Sector is seeking to fill one Group Leader (GL) position on our Bedford campus.  Qualified candidates will have a strong technical background in one or more of the following: acoustics, sonar, radar, signal processing, and prototype development, coupled with demonstrated technical leadership experience.  Selected candidates will serve as direct supervisor for assigned department staff. In addition, GLs are expected to work in partnership with the department leadership team guiding technical direction, shaping the work program, and growing the workforce. GLs must balance their department management and leadership roles with other technical work program commitments as assigned.  

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Staff Engagement and Development – Conduct periodic performance and development conversations, recognize staff accomplishments, communicate regularly with work leaders on staff growth opportunities and performance.

  • Collaboration and Communication – Facilitate regular communication between staff and project/task leaders, serve as a proactive liaison between staff and upper management, seek out collaboration opportunities within the Department, the Division, and the Center. 

  • Capability Development – Assist the department leadership team with workforce shaping, support program development, and maintaining awareness of emerging technologies. Help evolve the department vision and contribute to the technical roadmap. 

  • Recruiting and Hiring – Play a key role in the department recruiting and hiring process, to include screening resumes and participating in interviews. 

  • Team Building and Technical Stature – Work with the department leadership and staff to promulgate a culture of trust, excellence, teamwork, respect, and continued learning and innovation to solve the most difficult challenges and maintain a highly-skilled workforce.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain at least a Secret security clearance which requires US citizenship. 

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field. 

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Proactive self-starter with strong analytical, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Candidates must have a strong technical background with experience in one or more of the following: acoustic, radar, and/or sonar signal processing, algorithm development, detection and estimation theory, wave propagation, numerical methods, experimental data analysis, prototype development, and/or communication theory. 

  • Experience using analytical software tools such as MATLAB or Python for modeling, simulation, and analysis of physical systems. 

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance. 

  • Expertise in acoustics, radar and sonar signal processing, and prototype development.  

  • Experience with field testing of maritime devices. 

  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with internal and external parties. 

  • Experience with US government systems and the US government research ecosystem. 

  • Possess an external network of government sponsors and contacts.
