Department Summary:
MITRE’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) Solutions department in the AI and Autonomy Innovation Center is seeking qualified HCAI Engineers to drive research in AI and Machine Learning (ML) technologies for solving problems for a safer world. The department applies human-centered engineering to AI and software development practices, empowering diverse human teams and AI-enabled systems to produce greater outcomes together than either could alone. The department supports a wide range of sponsors and internal customers and is active in MITRE’s internal research program. The successful candidate will design, execute, and apply research that explores human interactions with emerging AI technologies such as Large Language Models (LLM) in the context of our sponsors’ priorities and use cases.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Assist MITRE and government sponsors in executing and applying research to solve problems related to human-AI interaction and societal impacts of AI in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense
Contribute to human-centered research on AI, including formal experimental research and observational/naturalistic research
Demonstrate academic and industry best practices for human-centered AI research
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree with less than one year of related work experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Hands-on experience doing research to answer questions related to human factors and AI systems
Familiarity with and interest to learn and grow in one or more of the following human-AI interaction topics: Usability of AI systems, Augmenting human work and decision making with AI, Explainable AI, Trust in AI, Societal and sociotechnical impacts of AI, AI risks and governance.
Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, platforms, and systems
Strong written and verbal communications skills
Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Human Factors, Computer Science, Social Sciences, or related field
Experience with and/or passion for working with national security or the public sector
Experience working with LLMs and basic understanding of their capabilities and limitations
Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance
Experience in Python or another programming language frequently used for AI/ML prototyping
