Department Summary:

The Proactive Safety Monitoring Department (P234) is seeking a Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer. P234, a member of the Transportation Safety Division, is seeking to advance global transportation safety through focused development and application of aviation data engineering practices and analytic architectures, collaborative research environments, AI/ML and Natural Language Processing, flight operations data analytics, and safety metrics definition and analysis to advance continuous and proactive safety monitoring to achieve the Next Level of Transportation Safety. The position involves researching, developing, evaluating, and integrating generative AI capabilities, with a particular focus on security and trust, especially for LLMs.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Work in and provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams to develop and implement LLM solutions

  • Analyze LLM use cases and recommend secure and trustworthy solutions

  • Develop aviation-domain specific LLMs

  • Prototype LLM-based tools to meet operational needs

  • Evaluate technology solutions in the context of mission data and workflow needs, and provide actionable recommendations

  • Convey complex ideas to non-technical audiences through briefings and/or white papers

  • Contribute to projects or small teams to solve complex AI security problems for our sponsors

  • Develop generative AI assurance capabilities to enable the responsible and assured use of capabilities

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related disciplines; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • Demonstrated recent experience with large language models

  • Demonstrated advanced skills with Python and the standard ML stack (Tensorflow/Torch, NumPy, Pandas, etc.)

  • Demonstrated skills in the development of domain-specific LLMs

  • Demonstrated skills in the development of evaluation benchmarks for LLMs

  • Ability to work independently to learn new technologies, methods, processes, frameworks/platforms, and systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate challenging technical concepts to both lay and expert audiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track-record of successful deployment of AI/ML systems or components that have been used by customers or stakeholders outside of a lab/experimental setting
