Department Summary:

The Software Wellness Innovation, Facilitation, and Technology Department (L53A) in the Software Engineering Innovation Center is seeking a thought leader to support, shape, and grow our work program around the concept of holistic software utility, usability, and fit for purpose. This individual will have an opportunity to help evolve our outcomes and strategy, identify, capture, and lead new opportunities, fuel software engineering innovation, and lead key related activities. They will provide thought leadership, technical leadership, and mentorship across a geographically diverse organization and across a number of different domains and technologies.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Software Wellness Practitioner and Team Lead for high value, high impact engagements

  • Lead teams for key engagements, to include mentorship, technical oversight, customer engagement, and work shaping

  • Apply technical subject matter expertise for key engagements

  • Drive new software wellness investments, key research areas, and new lines of investigation

  • Thought leader in one or more of the following strategic focus areas: software engineering, software development lifecycle, software/system architecture, artificial intelligence (AI), and software supply chain

  • Impact sponsor work programs at a strategic level through direct contributions, influence, and strategic work shaping

  • Contribute externally to the software engineering ecosystem via publishing, presenting, and/or developing new concepts and approaches

  • Work with other key members of the organization to shape the department’s strategy and focus

  • Mentor other technical staff

  • Partner with Project Leaders to develop opportunities for staff across the Software Engineering Innovation Center

  • Create new opportunities for the organization

  • Work with sponsors and project leads to understand their needs and future vision

  • Demonstrate technical stature via position papers, publications, and proposals

  • Formulate innovative approaches for technology transition to sponsors, MITRE’s internal IR&D program or external grants.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • Experience managing projects and/or experience as a direct supervisor / group lead

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret clearance

  • Experience developing work programs, shaping work programs, and creating program relationships

  • 10+ years experience in modern software languages such as Python, Java, C/C++, and/or Javascript

  • Experience working with large, complex software systems and key software system processes (technical debt mitigation, agile development, system architecture, legacy modernization, etc)

  • Experience working with complex software systems and large software system processes (technical debt mitigation, agile development, system architecture, legacy modernization, etc.)

  • Technical stature in software engineering and/or software architecture topics, including publications, presentations, and/or patents

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Top Secret clearance

  • Master’s, PhD, or other advanced degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field

  • Demonstrated success in the capture of research funding

  • Experience delivering complex systems to government or industry customers

$181,000 - $226,000 - $271,000 Annual
