WSP is currently initiating a search for a Director, Transportation Planner for the New England region, located in our Boston, MA office. The primary need is in the Massachusetts market, and enhancing client contacts and growing business in Massachusetts will be the primary focus for the successful candidate. The successful candidate is a public transit expert, with comprehensive bus transportation knowledge and experience, and a track record of team leadership. The successful candidate will also support business development and project delivery in other New England states, including Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, organizing, and executing the full range of project activities, including management of large tasks and small projects, analysis and evaluation, research, report writing, public involvement, and client relations in support of transportation planning and engineering projects.

  • Reviewing multimodal transportation information related to public transit, motor vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, and other transportation modes; identifying key issues; proposing physical, technological, and policy improvements; evaluating benefits and impacts; and developing findings and recommendations.

  • Executing conceptual design for transit priority, multimodal transportation, and Complete Streets design projects.

  • Evaluating land use and urban planning issues, assessing transit-oriented development opportunities, developing creative solutions, and supporting clients in implementing these solutions.

  • Communicating with public sector and private sector clients, stakeholders, and the general public, in written, oral, and graphic forms.

  • Supporting marketing and business development activities, including gathering client intelligence, proposal writing, and developing relationships with clients and colleagues through project work and professional organizations.

  • Identifying opportunities for junior staff to grow in project management, strategic and business planning, and business development

  • Maintaining ongoing familiarity with trends and emerging issues related to transportation, public transit, transit vehicle technology, land use, economic development and demographic shifts

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of twelve years’ experience; advanced degrees may substitute for one or more year of experience

  • Knowledge of planning principles and practices with an emphasis on public transit and transportation projects

  • Knowledge of principles and practice of research and data collection

  • Proven business development track record and show a track record of successfully managing a pipeline of work for their staff

  • Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of how to leverage existing skillsets and an ability to incorporate existing staff into the pursuit of new projects

  • Project management expertise

  • Provide a successful track record of staying within budget and schedule on projects they have managed.

  • Ability to demonstrate a consistent track record of delivering work on-time, on-budget, and can show repeat business with a client ideally in increasing amounts and/or responsibility

  • Strong understanding of relevant transportation planning issues, including public transit, bus operations, multimodal planning, smart growth development, transit-oriented development, pedestrian and bicycle planning, Complete Streets design, and transit planning.

  • Ability to establish partnerships with internal and external project management, client representatives, government agencies, and other organizations.

  • Experience preparing planning studies, technical reports, for a wide variety of transportation and transit agencies

  • Good organizational skills, multi-tasking capabilities and attention to detail

  • Excellent analytical, written, oral, and visual communication skills and ability to think creatively and critically about planning issues, and to effectively deliver multiple tasks and projects on deadlines.

  • Ability to work well independently and in a group setting

  • Experience working with MassDOT, the MBTA, other New England state DOTs and transit agencies, and other local and regional private entities and public sector agencies

  • Ability to travel out of the immediate area and to work outside of regular work hours if needed

  • Member and active participant in industry organizations such as APA, APTA, WTS, ASCE

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree(s)

  • Professional licensures and accreditations, such as: AICP, P.E., etc.

  • Active in Professional Organizations

  • Completion of Leadership or Management Training
