The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a motivated and technically skilled student majoring in the Biological sciences or pharmacy. The student should have strong interest in neuroscience and learning about CNS drug discovery. Successful candidates will be able to work independently, and will also be expected to proactively collaborate with colleagues. Primary responsibilities include contributing to the execution of in vitro experiments including establishing in vitro cell-based model systems, development of immunoassays and performing biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of tissues to support the identification and validation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases. The candidate will be an active participant in the positive and critical scientific dialogue that supports our mission of target identification and validation.

The responsibilities of the Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Design, execute, interpret andreport in vitro and in vivo experiments.

  • Assist in developing, executing, andtroubleshooting new cell assays, protocols and imaging methods

  • Conducting experiments to determineefficacy of test compounds, establish dose-response andpharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships, investigate biomarker responsesand target engagement or modulation in vivo

  • Support characterization andvalidation of antibody activity in cell based and in vivo models

  • Communication of data clearly andconcisely to teams and stakeholders

  • Monitor, review and criticallyinterpret published work to guide their own research

  • Collaborate with members from otherfunctional areas, including medicinal chemistry, in vivo and in vitropharmacology and genetics


  • Candidates must be actively working towards a degree inBiological Sciences or a related discipline such as chemistry, pharmacy orhealth-related field

Required Experience:

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 6 months beginning in July of 2018

  • Candidates must have some experience with in vivo (mouse) techniques,including stereotaxic surgery, handling, dosing

  • Candidates must have some experience with basic lab procedures:pipetting, solution preparation, plate assays

  • Candidates must have the ability to perform accurate dataanalysis

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong desire todevelop knowledge of neuroscience drug discovery

  • Neuroscienceclass work preferred

  • Preferredexperience with basic mammalian cell culture, i.e., transfections, primaryneurons

  • Excellentoral and written communication skills, including preparation of lab reports andpresentations. Strong attention to detail

  • Experiencewith rodent behavior, animal handling, dosing procedures a plus
