Job Description

About the role:

At Takeda, we are committed to lifelong learning.

To that end, Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience to start your career or further develop in your expertise.

The summer internship program is a full-time commitment of 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Our internship program also provides you the opportunity to network with people at Takeda through various planned events and activities.

Project Outline:

Case narratives that are reported on observed Adverse Events (AEs) associated with using a drug, contain longitudinal data about health status of patients, diseases, conducted tests and response to treatments, and details that allow causal inference. Analyzing such information can prove of immense value not only for clinical practice, but also for the organization and management of healthcare services. Given the value of information embedded in narrative of AE reports from patients, a significant human effort is dedicated to translating unstructured textual filed into structured format to facilitate further analysis of data for purposes such as causality assessment, which is defined as finding a causal association or relationship between a drug and a drug adverse event reaction. The process of causality assessment is vital to the company, to identify any source of safety signals as soon as possible, prevent company from regularity issues, and above all to improve safety of patients. Currently, this process is significantly relied on human efforts of medical domain expertise, as a rare resource, to review the reported cases and prioritize the ones with the need for further investigation.

Recent advances in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), have shown to be effective in facilitating the automation of traditionally manual tasks. The goal of this project is to assess the application of NLP directly on AE free-text case narratives that are reported to the company to categorize cases with potential evidence of causality relatedness to the drug under investigation. Such analysis is beneficial to explore the potential of NLP in reducing human efforts and move toward automation for ranking reported cases with the highest urgency for individual medical review by experts.
