State of Massachusetts (5) Surface Water Discharge Permitting Program - Student Interns in Boston, Massachusetts
The EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit Program is administered by the EPA. MassDEP administers a parallel Surface Water Discharge (SWD) Permitting Program. Both programs control water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants to surface waters. Point sources include discharges from municipal wastewater treatment facilities, industrial facilities, and stormwater conveyed through pipes. This project will assist the SWD program with day to day operations as well as explore special topics.
_Description of Internship Duties_
Prepare draft permits and fact sheets for public notice.
Assist permit writers with data analyses and permit management.
Keep SWD Permitting Web page up to date.
Research relevant wastewater and permitting-related topics, as needed.
_Knowledge and Skills Needed_
· Enrollment in a science based or data related degree program.
· Educational experience with data manipulation and knowledge of basic statistics.
· Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Educational experience with technical writing.
Because MassDEP is presently working remotely, candidates will work remotely, until staff return to the office. Candidates will need a computer with Windows 10 and office suite and will be expected to work on their own computers. Candidates will also need to have internet access as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be provided.
