State of Massachusetts (6) Watershed Planning Program - Student Interns in Boston, Massachusetts

_Project Name_:MassachusettsSurface Water Quality Data Exploration and Analyses

  • *

_Project Description_

The Massachusetts Surface Water Quality Standards (SWQS; 314 CMR 4.00) section, located in Worcester, implements the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) to protect surface waters (e.g., rivers, streams, estuaries, etc.) throughout the Commonwealth. The SWQS designates the most sensitive uses for these waters and establishes minimum water quality criteria required to support these uses. Under the CWA, all states must review their water quality standards every three years to ensure that policies reflect the latest available information. Essential steps in this process are the development of new water quality criteria and proposing updates to existing criteria based on the latest scientific knowledge.

_Description of Internship Duties_

To prepare for future triennial reviews in Massachusetts, the intern will assist with compiling and analyzing long-term discrete and continuous water quality data collected from Massachusetts’ waters. This project will include the application of different water quality data analysis methods, such as analyzing long-term trends in surface water quality data, and a mapping component. Completing this project will involve the use of Microsoft Excel, potentially other data analysis applications (e.g., R), and mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS).

_Knowledge and Skills Needed_

An ideal candidate will have the ability to pay attention to detail, the ability to manage and analyze large datasets, and Microsoft Office proficiency. Familiarity with additional data analysis and mapping software is welcomed.

Because MassDEP is presently working remotely, candidates will work remotely, until staff return to the office. Candidates will need a computer with Windows 10 and office suite and will be expected to work on their own computers. Candidates will also need to have internet access as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be provided.
