State of Massachusetts Agriculture Land Use Outreach Contractor in Boston, Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources' (MDAR) mission is to help keep the Massachusetts’ food supply safe and secure, and to work to keep Massachusetts agriculture economically and environmentally sound.
MDAR’s Division of Agricultural Conservation and Technical Assistance protects agricultural land and provides farmers with the tools and funding to ensure the sound stewardship of agricultural land. A key program within the division is the Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) Program which preserves and protects agricultural land from being built upon for non-agricultural purposes or used for any activity detrimental to agriculture. The division also coordinates a state land licensing program, and grant programs addressing farm viability, climate resiliency and environmental resource issues.
MDAR seeks a qualified individual applicant for the position of Agricultural Land Use Outreach Contractor to help develop an effective education and outreach component for current and potential participants in the Department’s land use and funding programs including the Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) Program. This position is anticipated to be for less than one year based on funding. The salary assumes 1388 hours. There are no benefits associated with this position other than earned sick leave.
The Land Use Outreach Coordinator will assist with a variety of duties including:
Develop Outreach Strategy for MDAR land use and grant programs.
Create clear information for landowners and farmers about the Department’s land use and grant programs including a manual on state Farmland Preservation and a regular newsletter.
Develop an “informational packet” of materials for landowners describing the assistance/stewardship tools available to farmers through Department programs including grant programs.
Organize informational workshops to provide an overview of all APR Program requirements for interested landowners and existing farmers.
Assist in the organization of special events to promote Department land use and resource based programs.
Arrange public hearings, as needed, related to the Department’s land use programs.
Participate in regular outreach events in the community and educate the public about the Department’s land use and resource based programs
Provide content for any relevant Department press releases/ social media accounts including Facebook and Twitter (current).
Represent the Department at workshops and conferences – possibly in the evening and on weekends.
Qualification and Requirements:
Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle
Two to five years relevant work experience – may include community building, communications, environmental education, project management.
An undergraduate degree in a related field, such as communications, marketing or environmental education, or comparable professional training.
Strong presentation and writing abilities, especially writing outreach/marketing materials reports and educational materials anddemonstrated proficiency with social media.
Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Understanding of, and enthusiasm for agriculture, land conservation and environmental issues.
Detail-orientated with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
Strong knowledge of social media and other basic marketing platforms.
Friendly, enthusiastic and positive attitude. Possess a high level of emotional intelligence, confidence, and competency when working with people to collaborate.
Self-starter with the ability to work independently, gather data and produce results without supervision.
The ability to communicate complicated topics in a clear and concise manner.
The ability to respond in timely manner to MDAR communications.
