Boston University Assistant Director, Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Boston Medical Center and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC) is recruiting a Transfusion Medicine Physician to join the blood bank and transfusion medicine service as an Assistant Director for Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine. The successful applicant will also receive an academic appointment at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, at a rank commensurate with experience.

Required Skills

The qualified applicant should possess an M.D., D.O., or MBBS with board certification (or board eligible) from the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, and be eligible to practice in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is an excellent opportunity for early career clinical pathologists with experience in blood banking, apheresis, and cellular therapy. Experience in coagulation is also desirable but not required.

BMC’s blood bank laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). It operates 24 hours a day and transfuses approximately 13,000 products per year to support both adult and pediatric patients, a Level 1 trauma center, heme/onc, transplant, and ob/gyn services. The apheresis consultation service performs approximately 300 procedures per year including red cell and plasma exchanges, and leukocytapheresis for both autologous stem cell transplants and other cellular therapies including CAR T-cells.

The applicant will report to the current Blood Bank Medical Director and share clinical service coverage as well as educational responsibilities, including didactics and service-related teaching for pathology and laboratory medicine residents, and interdepartmental teaching of Medical School students and residents (e.g., general medicine, nephrology, hematology/oncology, surgery, dental, etc.). Pursuit of clinical and/or translational research is also expected.

Located in the historic South End neighborhood, BMC is a 514-bed teaching hospital for the School of Medicine. Some of its many distinctions include: being the largest safety-net hospital in New England, the largest Level I trauma center in New England, a Sickle Cell Center for Excellence, and International Amyloidosis Referral Center.

Candidates historically underrepresented in medicine are strongly encouraged to apply. The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine firmly believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, residents, staff and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our clinical and scholarly work. As a department and institution, we embrace and champion anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
