Automation Engineer, Kohler Energy

Work Mode: Remote

Location : Remote work from home with 5-10% travel in the US


The Automation Engineer is responsible for the overall deployment, including hardware integration, commissioning, testing and support, for the Heila platform and downstream devices .

Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and deploy, Heila’s solutions to address project and market needs, ensuring high quality and timely delivery.

  • Contribute to the development of Heila’s test and build infrastructure.

  • Work collaboratively with the Project Managers to define key project milestones, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.

  • Directly interact with customer and project stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure systems deployed exceed expectations.

  • Provide technical assistance, support, and collaboration, leveraging technical knowledge of Heila’s products and the industry at large to solve challenges.

  • Create project reports and documentation needed for commercial operation and financial close.

  • Train and mentor less experienced teammates.


  • A minimum of 3 years of automation work experience focusing on communications and system integration such as DER management, deployment of building management systems, SCADA, etc. in an industrial/engineering environment.

  • Experience working with communication protocols such as: Modbus, CAN bus, DNP3, IEC 61850, etc.

  • Experience programming in languages such as Java, Python or C/C++ in UNIX environments.

  • Ability to debug and solve problems in unfamiliar code bases and environments.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) degree in EE, CE, CS or equivalent.

  • Ability to travel as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with networking and troubleshooting.

  • Experience working in a client-facing role, interacting with product partners, vendors, and utilities to resolve issues with positive outcomes.

  • Experience with protocol client and server simulators.

  • Experience with PLC programming with IEC 61131-3 languages.

  • Field experience with voltage regulators, synchronizers, inverters, grid paralleling, and load sharing configuration.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of control and optimization systems used in DER projects.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of DER equipment and applications – including solar arrays, batteries, generators, fuel cells, etc.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of resilience and economic use cases in DER projects.

  • Good knowledge and understanding of power systems.

The salary range for this position is $104,850 - $133,550. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. Available benefits include medical, dental, vision & 401k.
