The Microsoft Federal Team is hiring an Azure Orbital Architect to plan and design new solutions for our customers to access Azure from any location on earth using 5G, Satellite communications (SATCOM) and software defined networking (SDN). As an Azure Orbital Architect, you will have the incredible opportunity to work on customer-critical initiatives that directly contribute to the future of Azure’s business. You must be deeply technical and able to ramp up in new areas quickly since your responsibilities will span many areas of Azure’s business as well as multiple layers of the cloud technology stack.

The position requires strong collaboration across teams and organization boundaries. You will work with several internal and external partners and do co-architecting with them on SATCOM, SDWAN, hybrid connectivity and modem technologies.

The Azure Orbital Architect will be involved in many aspects of designing the Azure Orbital ground segment. The qualified candidate will be involved in:

• Drive planning/architecting of Azure Orbital Infrastructure for customers

• Execute and maintain procedures required for building and configuring ground segment


• Interface with Azure Space team, external partners and customers.

• Identify solution patterns, gaps, whitespace, limits and adoption barriers and drive

feedback into the engineering teams to fuel the continued evolution of our cloud

platform through insights gained from customers.

To be successful in this challenging position, you will need exceptional cross-group collaboration, problem-solving skills, and strategic planning driven. The candidate needs to possess excellent communication and presentation skills as well as can effectively interface with employees, partners and customers at all levels. As a thought leader, the candidate will also need to have a deep understanding of the strategies and offerings of key competitors.


Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of DoD and communication systems and standards

  • 3 years+ experience in field deployments and operations

  • Knowledge in Networking: layer 2 and 3 routing, etc.

  • Excellent cross-organizational agility, partnering skills with ability to drive shared goals across multiple groups in different regions/continents

  • Strong customer and partner empathy, with demonstrated ability to translate real world business problems into end-to-end technology product solutions

  • Minimum B.S. in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent industry experience

  • Must have an active TS and be willing to upgrade to TS/SCI or have an active TS/SCI.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years+ experience in Ground stations deployments and operations

US Citizenship: The successful candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of US Citizenship to meet federal government security requirements.

Top Secret Clearance:The successful candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret Security Clearance. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.

Clearance Verification: This position requires successful verification of the stated security clearance to meet federal government customer requirements. You will be asked to provide clearance verification information prior to an offer of employment.

Cloud Screening: Candidates must be able to successfully complete and pass a Microsoft Cloud background screening. Required Cloud Screenings will be administered on a recurring bi-annual basis.

The salary for this role in the state of Colorado is between $116,900 to $175,300. At Microsoft, certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
