This position offers multiple learning experiences in the field of Ophthalmology with a focus on data collection, database management, statistical analysis, and manuscript writing. The research assistant will work closely with the primary investigator to investigate clinical outcomes and the delivery of eye care using multiple data sources including nationally representative surveys, electronic health record registries, and insurance claims databases. This role offers many opportunities to collaborate with a diverse group of clinical professionals and to attend medical conferences within the department and nationally.

This Clinical Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Manage multiple clinical research projects at once.

  • Draft study protocols for approval by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Learn to manage and review the IRB process for the department together with other research assistants.

  • Navigate the electronic medical record systems used at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) to review patient charts for research purposes - screening patients for research eligibility and entering patient data into databases.

  • Manage research data use agreements and database access and storage.

  • Perform descriptive statistical analyses, with opportunities to learn advanced statistical programming.

  • Draft literature review and data summaries for distribution to research team and collaborators.

  • Prepare abstracts and manuscripts for submission to medical journals and national conferences with opportunities for primary and co-authorships.

  • Perform other miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned or required.

  • Opportunities to shadow the primary investigator and other physicians in the clinic and operating room.

In order to qualify for the role you must have:

  • Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in a science, engineering, or public health-related field. New/recent college graduates with an interest in pursuing a career in medicine are desired.

  • Work requires a basic knowledge of statistics and computer programming. Experience using the R programming language is preferred.

  • Work requires well-developed communication skills to manage projects with people across many different professions within the hospital and organizational skills to manage multiple projects at various stages of completion.

  • Work requires advanced writing skills for preparing IRB submissions, abstracts, and drafting manuscripts.

  • Ability to commute to the BCH main campus in longwood.

  • Ability to work on weekends and evenings to accommodate research deadlines as needed.

  • A two-year commitment to the position is preferred.
