State of Massachusetts Clinical Social Worker (C) in Boston, Massachusetts
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Clinical Social Worker (C) for the hospital campus in Jamaica Plain.
The Clinical Social Worker C is responsible for the assessment of a client’s emotional, social, legal and environmental deficits, and provides clinical counseling and casework services to patients in the outpatient setting.
Services are provided to both Office Based Opioid Treatment Clinic (OBOT) clients as well as Ambulatory Care Clinic (ACC) patients; s/he accepts individual counseling referrals from both settings; is consulted by ACC medical providers to help formulate treatment plans to enable patients to address their emotional and environmental stressors on a medical psychosocial basis; s/he is available for brief crisis intervention as needed.
The Clinical Social Worker C provides leadership and consultation. Provides individual and group psychotherapy for designated clients. S/he performs teaching activities. Develops curriculum and participates in the development of policies, procedures and standards of care for the patient population served. S/he initiates and participates in research activities. Lastly, s/he provides leadership and consultation to multidisciplinary staff in the psychosocial treatment and management of clients.
Please Note: This position is 37.50 hours per week, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Days off are Saturday and Sunday.
_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive_):
Provides psychotherapy based on a theoretical framework as rationale for practice.
Accepts referrals from OBOT providers and ACC physicians and advanced practice nurses.
Works collaboratively with OBOT/ACC providers when treatment planning.
Acts as a social work consultant for both OBOT and ACC patients.
Functions as a partner in the interdisciplinary outpatient team including physicians, advanced practice nurses, nurses, and social workers.
Provides brief assessments to ACC clients needing additional support related to psychosocial, family, legal, addiction, etc. issues.
Provides crisis intervention to ACC clients as needed.
Participates in performance appraisal activities as directed by Department Head.
Stimulates deliberate and conscious planning for the improvement of patient care by acting as a catalyst and/or initiator of planned change. Participates in ongoing QA activities.
Actively participates in evaluation/research activities:
o Investigates methods of delivery of care.
o Studies response of illness in order to plan and implement rehabilitative measures.
o Assists staff in interpreting and implementing research findings.
o Utilizes research finding to modify theory as it relates to clinical practice.
Assumes responsibility for own continuing education and professional growth of others.
Contributes to the enhancement of the therapeutic milieu by active participation on committees and activities by providing both formal and informal teaching/training programs, including but not limited to: new psychotherapy techniques, special interventions and clinical management
Utilizes MediTech system as an ongoing communication mechanism between the multidisciplinary team and the Clinical Social Worker.
Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated ability in psychotherapy: including individual, family and group work.
Knowledge of the types of programs and services available to individuals with an addictive disorder and/or co-morbid mental illnesses.
Knowledge of principles and practices of crisis intervention as well as ability to implement crises intervention techniques and respond appropriately.
Knowledge of the managed care review system and time limited treatment approaches.
Ability to prescribe short or long term approaches based on presenting problems and interacting with managed care company staff and develop outcome data (telephone and personal interview).

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 260 inpatient beds including 115 Psychiatric beds and 28 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a clinical social worker after earning a Master's degree in social work.
A Doctorate in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling education, or human services may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
A Master's or higher degree in social work is required.
Licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Worker or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Social Work is required.
Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.*
