Job Description

The opportunity

Accountable for open and closed-end fund shareholder reports and regulatory filings, including compliance with US GAAP and SEC regulations, managing the Funds’ Disclosure Controls and Procedures (DC&P) processes, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance. This includes a lead role in managing the Funds’ Accounting Policy Committee and Financial Statements Disclosure Committee. In addition, responsible for directing Fund Reporting workflows and the allocation of departmental resources.

Responsibilities

  • Follow developments in US GAAP and SEC regulations that are relevant to investment companies and ensure that the implications of such developments are well understood, and that departmental accounting and financial reporting policies remain appropriate.

  • Responsible for allocating and coordinating resources within Fund Reporting including support, development, and mentoring of staff.

  • Oversee and direct all department functions, including shareholder reporting, SEC regulatory filings, DC&P and Officer Certification processes.

  • Take on detail review of most complex funds and projects to ensure appropriate staff training as well as establishment of appropriate controls and procedures surrounding regulatory reporting of complex securities and products.

  • Help manage issues identified during the reporting process with multiple custodian banks, fund accounting agents, and internal Fund Administration teams

  • Coordinate and lead DC&P meetings for certain complex products and work with partners throughout the organization to maintain and update DC&P documentation to reflect changing processes and achieve ongoing compliance with the provisions of SOX.

  • Reporting into the General Director, Financial Reporting/SOX Compliance, this role is critical to meeting the regulatory reporting requirements of the John Hancock mutual funds.

  • Working closely with individuals in JH Fund Administration along with the Funds’ advisors, subadvisors, accounting agents, custodian banks and other service agents, this role provides support to the Funds’ Treasurers, CFOs, CEOs and Trustees as well as to the coordination and successful completion of over 200 fund audits annually.

What we are looking for

  • Strong interpersonal skills including ability to manage and collaborate with a large team on multiple projects and deliverables and work with and influence management at various levels of the organization

  • Superior technical skills including advanced knowledge of US GAAP (as it pertains to mutual funds, consolidations, complex securities), SEC regulations, tax laws and industry standards

  • Audit experience required, preferably with a Big 4 Accounting firm, including 10 years’ experience in mutual fund industry

  • Advanced analytic and problem-solving skills with ability to identify, evaluate and make recommendations with respect to both internal control deficiencies and accounting issues

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance as well as an advanced degree (MBA, MSF or MST) or certification (CPA or CFA) or equivalent working experience

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Boston, Massachusetts

Salary range is expected to be between

$114,975.00 USD - $206,955.00 USD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
