State of Massachusetts Director of Nursing in Boston, Massachusetts

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a dynamic nursing professional to serve as the Director of Nursing (DON). This is a vital leadership position that ensures appropriate utilization and delivery of high quality and innovative services to patients that are effective, compassionate, and focused on rehabilitative integration across a spectrum of medical and allied health disciplines. Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the DON plans, organizes, directs and evaluates Nursing & Patient Care services for Department of Public Health patients and clients, while working in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health (DMH), Department of Developmental Services (DDS), and Department of Correction (DOC). The incumbent will partner with the DON for DMH on the Inpatient Psychiatric Units of LSH along with other state agencies and the community to ensure nursing services at the hospital meet established standards. * * _Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Oversees LSH’s extensive patient care services division including nursing services, continuing care, dialysis, Ambulatory Care Services, Operating Room, PACU, GI Suite, Central Supply Room, ancillary and clinical support services, and patient transportation. * Provides strategic oversight and direction of all patient care, needs assessments, nursing diagnosis, to ensures that nursing care meets established standards. * Develops metrics for the evaluation of patient care service, quality improvement and refinement of all aspects of service delivery. * Consults with managers and staff relevant to patient care issues and serves as an advisory resource to abate or resolve problems/issues. * Investigates and utilizes internal/external resources to maintain current trends, technology, regulations, legislation, and political activities affecting Nursing Practice. * Participates in regular labor management meetings and recommends employee relations issues. * Assesses and adapts policies and procedures that address the hospital’s evolving mission and demographics while adhering to regulatory agency requirements. * Evaluates staffing levels and arranges adjustments based on patient acuity, census, and available staff. * Participates in developing the department specific budgets based on historical data, goals, and objectives to promote optimum patient care. * Designs and advocates for staff development opportunities that offers growth and career advancement potential. * Partners with Medical Director and Director of Quality Improvement to report serious reportable events, respond to patient complaints and other reportable events. * Evaluates the work performance of all nursing personnel and facilitates ongoing feedback/appraisal. * Champions a positive image of the Nursing Department through effective interaction with patients, visitors, physicians, community, providers, and the general public. * Enhances professional growth/development to keep abreast of the latest trends in public health; remains current on issues and trends impacting healthcare. * Demonstrates an awareness of changes in Nursing practice influenced by state and national policy. * * _Preferred Qualifications_: * Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Nursing and five (5) years senior-level management experience in a hospital/healthcare setting. * Proficient understanding of the principles and practices of adult nursing including theories of public health and public health nursing. * Demonstrated knowledge and practice with budgeting as it relates to program management in health care settings. * Ability to establish relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians, and staff members. * Proven experience in all aspects of quality improvement in a healthcare setting. * Familiarity with standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, techniques, safety practices and medical terminology/abbreviations. * In depth understand of labor laws and managing across multiple collective bargain agreements. * Commitment to cultivating a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment for both patients and staff. * Strong technology skills and experience working with electronic medical records (Meditech and Meta systems). * Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook. _About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH):_ LSH takes pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. LSH serves populations that are mostly indigent, often in the care and custody of state agencies, and present with clinical issues that arise from mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse. LSH provides 260 inpatient beds and 25 specialty medical clinics, including surgical services, to patients and clients referred by private sector providers and state agencies.
