A Day in the Life

This Distinguished engineer position is a key technical leadership role within the Surgical Research and Technology (R&T) organization at Medtronic. R&T supports all four businesses within the Surgical OU, including robotic surgery, advanced surgical instrumentation, general surgical therapies, and digital surgery technologies. R&T explores solutions that cross the boundaries between these groups to optimize outcomes for patients and deliver precise and predictable surgery.

This individual will be responsible for defining and leading projects that advance the broad range of product portfolios within the Surgical OU. Using an entrepreneurial and systems mindset, they will work closely with clinical and marketing leaders to identify potential products and technologies that address significant unmet clinical needs. They will explore product solutions and identify critical technical, clinical, and business risks that must be addressed to realize the solution. They will then create project plans, assemble and organize project teams, define milestones, and lead teams to achieve the desired results.

This is a pivotal role within R&T with visibility and technical influence at the highest levels of Medtronic and across the company. We are looking for a seasoned, inspiring, strategic-minded technical individual with extensive medical device expertise and a track record of hands-on development experience, as well as, defining scalable platform level solutions. The job requires excellent communication skills to define and sell an opportunity, enable fruitful collaboration across a multidisciplinary team, and lead a team to define and achieve critical goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership:

  • Support the development and execution of a long-term strategy to innovate the future of surgery

  • Provide key insights and experience to define future products and technology roadmaps

  • Identify technologies that have the potential to advance and transform Medtronic’s products

  • Lead and/or support multiple projects within Surgical R&T

  • Guide development teams to ideate and optimize design solutions based on extensive experience in product development

  • Drive key architectural thinking and designs that enable modularity and the use of common components, subsystems and overall platforms across the company

  • Mindset, Communication, and Collaboration:

  • Advocate and communicate the strategic vision of R&T

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to Medtronic’s leadership team

  • Establish and promote cross functional and cross operating unit technical collaborations

  • Share knowledge across the organization, acting as a center of knowledge

  • Mentor and support technical leaders and peers throughout the organization

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 13 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Masters or PhD degree in engineering or similar field

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in defining and creating complex medical products & platforms

  • Experience with robotics

  • Major involvement in medical device projects from initial conception to full production & implementation

  • Continuous learner who adapts quickly and positively to change and is a skilled change agent

  • An active listener, a strong and clear communicator, and confident presenter

  • Cogent, concise written communication

  • Experience independently managing and prioritizing design approach to multiple projects (e.g. consultancy) or complex systems (e.g. medical systems); experience with timelines and budgeting

  • Workflow agility and clear communication to meet fluid project priorities and requirements and tight timelines

The provided base salary range is used nationally in the United States (except in Puerto Rico and certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc. This position is eligible for a short-term incentive plan.
