State of Massachusetts District Director - Office of Senator Joan Lovely in Boston, Massachusetts

The District Director is responsible for staffing the Senator at events in the district, overseeing and handling constituent matters, and assisting with legislative matters, as assigned.


Constituent Services

  • Oversees all constituent service matters that come into the office;

  • Handles casework assignments to other staff members;

  • Conducts meetings with constituents and state and local stakeholders regarding pertinent matters;

  • Serves as a liaison to federal, state, and local government agencies;

  • Informs the Senator and Chief of Staff of all developments in their assigned cases;

  • Assesses casework for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff;

  • Screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other offices;

  • Log incoming and outgoing emails and telephone calls relating to constituent casework;

  • Continually screens active cases and acts as a liaison with constituents to ensure their cases are handled in a timely and responsive manner; and

  • Maintains up-to-date files on all cases and categories of information of importance to the office.

Local Meetings, Events and Issues

  • Monitors and staffs the Senator at district meetings and events;

  • Responsible for staffing office hours;

  • Prepares materials for meetings/events and briefs the Senator and/or Chief of Staff prior to meetings/events;

  • Stays abreast of local projects and issues;

  • Keeps Senator and Chief of Staff up-to-date on local projects and issues of importance;

  • Files, tracks, and oversees legislation files for municipalities in the districts, including all home rule petitions;

  • Provides Senator, Chief of Staff, and Legislative Director with regular updates on the status of local legislative priorities;

  • Works in conjunction with the Communications Director to develop social media content relevant to the district;

  • Adheres to weekly task guidelines;

  • Maintains a good working relationship with the Senator, staff and constituents;

  • Meets deadlines as set by the Senator, Chief of Staff, and legislative calendar;

  • Meets attendance requirements as established by the office; and

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others;

  • Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Knowledge of office computer applications as well as social media applications;

  • Transportation to district meetings and events; and

  • Familiarity with the 2nd Essex District preferred.


A minimum of a bachelor's degree is preferred. Alternatively, two years of related work experience.
