THIS IS A SUMMER POSITION. EMPLOYMENT IS SEASONAL AND TEMPORARY

Important Notice: Mandatory Safety Care Certification for ESY Employment:

To be eligible to work Extended School Year (ESY), a Safety Care Certification is required. You must present a valid certificate at your interview or provide proof of enrollment in a Safety Care training no later than June 1, 2025. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the rescinding of your job offer. Please note, that Safety Care Certification is a mandatory prerequisite for this position, and we do not offer compensation for fulfilling this requirement.

This position is for the STRIVE program for students aged 18-22 only.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Extended School Year (ESY) is a Special Education program for students with disabilities whose IEP team has determined that in order to minimize substantial regression and reduce substantial recoupment time, a student is required to attend ESY. These services will be based on the individual needs of the students per their IEP goals/objectives. STRIVE is a transition program that falls under ESY.

When you are hired to work the Extended School Year (ESY) program, you are committing to the entire duration of the program. This means that your assignment may involve working at different sites, as staffing needs arise. Flexibility in location is an essential requirement of the position, and by accepting this job offer, you agree to be available for reassignment to various sites as needed throughout the program.

REPORTS TO: Position reports to the ESY Site Coordinator, who works in close collaboration with the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning in the Office of Special Education & Director of Transition. PROGRAM SCHEDULES:

  • DISC AND STRIVE Opportunities: The instructional hours for students DISC AND STRIVE Opportunities are 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks from July 7 to August 15, 2025.

  • The Paraprofessional is expected to:

  • Work all days of the program.

  • Attend Professional Development (PD) on June 26, 2025.

  • Terms:

  • Anticipated total of 180 paid hours on-site.

  • STRIVE Exploration: The instructional hours for students are typically 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 5 weeks from July 7, 2025, to August 8, 2025, as follows:

  • The Paraprofessional is expected to:

  • Work all days of the program.

  • Attend Professional Development (PD) on June 26, 2025.

  • Terms:

  • Anticipated total of 150 paid hours on-site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work all days of the program.

  • Support direct, small and whole group instruction to students with disabilities.

  • Assist with classroom and vocational activities including set-up and clean-up.

  • Assist with the safe arrival and dismissal of students.

  • Assist with breakfast and lunch for students.

  • Assist with field trip activities and other structured activities in or out of the class.

  • Provides support during arrival and dismissal, as outlined by the site coordinator.

  • Perform other related duties as requested by the ESY Special Education Teacher or ESY Site Coordinator.

  • Assist with the implementation of toileting/changing diapers.

TERMS:

  • The individual who is hired to this position agrees to the 2025 BPS Summer Employment Terms (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZfsrEFHXX6hI4vddcfVNHhjA4rrtFFisBKuEN6IZ_e4/edit?tab=t.0) .

  • This position is paid hourly at a rate of $37 per hour of instructional time on the Boston Public Schools bi-weekly payroll schedule.

  • This position is paid hourly at a rate of $30 per hour for the time estimated to complete all non-instructional responsibilities.

  • Additional work hours that exceed the (6) hours in a day will require approval from the Director of Extended School Year & Expanded Learning.

  • Please be advised that pursuant to Massachusetts and Federal law, BPS considers site coordinators to be professional employees (or exempt employees), and they are expected to work as long as necessary to complete the required work.

  • The individual who is hired to this position consents to electronic sign-in procedures on site, that is retained by BPS exclusively for audit and sign-in verification (payroll).

  • Failure to report to work on a given day of instructional time will result in a loss of pay for that day.

  • Job offers are conditional and based on sufficient student enrollment/attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Forty-eight (48) Credit Hours of College Coursework or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on one of the two following Formalized Standardized Assessments: ParaPro Assessment (http://www.ets.org/parapro/) or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants (http://www.act.org/workkeys/profcert/index.html).

  • Current Safety-care certification.

  • Minimum of two years experience working with children.

  • For STRIVE Exploration at Madison: Proficiency in ASL

  • Experience and ability working with special education teachers.

  • Experience and ability working with students with disabilities.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Current paraprofessional at a BPS school attended by students in this program.

  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

  • STRIVE also values candidates who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) or candidates who are experienced in using facilities maintenance equipment at university campuses.
