SCHEDULE: 40 hours, Sunday - Thursday 11:30PM-8:00AM; this position is essential in the event of a weather or other emergency.

Pays $23.00 per hour, plus $2.00 (shift differential pay) for every hour worked between 11:00pm - 7:00am

JOB DESCRIPTION:

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION:

The VTHP Overnight Counselor will provide an awake overnight presence, conduct regular rounds throughout the building, be accessible to tenants, assisting with regular daily tenant wellness checks, overseeing occupancy agreement and house rule compliance, setting limits when appropriate, and providing crisis intervention as necessary. The incumbent will contribute to the physical upkeep of the building by noting any housekeeping or maintenance issues that arise during their shift, resolving these problems where possible and forwarding these concerns to appropriate staff for later resolution when necessary. The VTHP Overnight Counselor will be an important member of a team, which has as its goal assisting our veterans to achieve the very highest possible quality of life.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Basic computer literacy using the current versions of Windows, Word and Email

  • English Literacy

    PREFERRED:

  • College degree

  • Bilingual English/Spanish

    KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

    REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of three (3) years- experience working with homeless population

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience providing good written documentation

    PREFERRED:

  • Prior experience in residential management, maintenance, and housekeeping

  • Familiarity with Harm Reduction approach to working with people with Behavioral Health challenges

  • Experience using Crisis Intervention

  • Knowledge of substance abuse issues and mental illness

    PHYSICAL ABILITIES/SKILLS:

    REQUIRED:

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (50 lbs.)

  • Ability to climb several flights of stairs

  • Ability to respond quickly and safely to emergencies

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Review all related e-mail correspondence to stay up-to-date with the needs of individual tenants.

  • Communicate regularly with supervisor and other staff of the residence. Perform wellness checks and report observations via e-mail system. Provide clear, concise documentation of encounters with tenants.

  • Assess and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Use emergency phone tree, and complete incident reports as necessary.

  • Report maintenance emergencies, as well as routine maintenance needs through the appropriate channels.

  • Oversee compliance with occupancy agreements and house rules. Monitor tenants and tenant-s guests who are awake and active in the house. Make regular rounds through the building to ensure all entrances are secure. Act to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment.

  • Provide awake and alert evening coverage, performing rounds, and monitoring all common areas of the building.

  • Promote social integration and cooperative problem solving.

  • Work with tenants on activities of daily living (ADL-s) and other means of enhancing quality of life and ability to live independently.

  • Be available to tenants, many of whom have chronic substance abuse and/or mental or physical health issues.

  • Represent Veterans Services in a professional manner in all contacts with neighbors and representatives of other agencies. Be aware of and responsive to the concerns of the communities in which this housing is located. Be proactive in taking the opportunity to talk with neighbors. Document and report any such contacts. Provide proper supervision and follow up with tenants regarding their behavior in our host communities.

  • Observe main entrance, ensure that all who enter are allowed to enter and follow required sign in protocol.

  • Attend all mandatory trainings and other trainings that will enhance ability to assist tenants in maintaining and enhancing their quality of life.

  • Check with all tenants on a daily basis. Complete the daily check list. Using the email group for this residence and other means, communicate with all relevant staff each day regarding information concerning tenants. Observe all policies and procedures related to the health and safety of the tenants.

  • Uphold the rights of all tenants. Be continually aware of these rights and act in accordance with these rights. Interact with tenants in ways which establish a climate of respect for human dignity.

  • Work cooperatively with representatives of all PSI departments, including but not limited to Development and External Affairs, Finance and Human Resources.

  • Accept additional duties or site reassignment in the event of an emergency affecting agency operations.

  • Ability to comply with and model compliance with all PSI policies and procedures, including occupational health and illness prevention policies and procedures. Perform other additional assignments or projects as requested/directed by supervisor.
