State of Massachusetts Industrial Accidents Investigator Apprentice in Boston, Massachusetts
The Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) mission is to administer the Commonwealth’s Workers Compensation system and to provide prompt and fair compensation to victims of occupational injuries and illnesses, and to see that medical treatment of injured workers is providedin a timely mannerwhile balancing the needs of employers to certain workers’ compensation insurance costs. The Apprentice Investigator position is a training level classification that involves a combination of classroom training and field experience. The apprentice will work under the oversight of an Investigator II while investigating violations of the Workers’ Compensation laws. Thisposition requires documenting actions in report form and testifying at hearings and other criminal proceedings. Duties and Responsibilities:(these duties are a general summary and are not all inclusive) * Successfully complete 150 hours of job-relatedclassroom training * Successfully complete 2000 hours of field work * Performs self-initiated inspections of employers for compliance with workers’ compensation laws * Issue Stop Work Orders to violators * Gathers evidence to support the issuance of a Stop Work Order * Documents all investigations in report form using proper grammar. * Interviews employers and employees, overcoming any language barriers * Utilizes computer to access various database and conduct research * Confers with legal staff in preparing cases and conducting investigations * Educates employees of their rights under the workers’ compensation statute * Builds relationships with other agencies and municipal inspectional services * Assistsin the investigation of claims filed against the Workers’ Compensation Trust Fund * Testifies at hearings and criminal court proceedings as needed Preferred Qualifications: * Ability to deal with highly emotional/agitated individuals in a professional manner andaccomplishtasks successfully * Ability to use computer for investigative purposes * Ability to review written material for relevance to workers’ compensation This position requires travel throughout Massachusetts, a current motor vehicle Driver’s License is required. Boston is themain officelocation. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements Applicants must have six months to one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in insurance claims handling/adjusting, customer-oriented or business environment. The Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) will consider the following educational substitutions for required experience: * Associate degree * Post-secondary education and any combination of required experience and education.
