Job Summary: Responsible for unit dose distribution including familiarity with medications, dosage forms and storage requirements. Communicates with Pharmacists and Nursing Staff to insure timely preparation and delivery of medications. Prepares and repackages medications into unit of use products. Delivers medications including controlled substances nursing areas and ancillary departments in accordance to established policies and procedures and DEA and DPH regulations.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Restocks floor stock/automated dispensing machines. Enters charges/credits against patient profile to ensure an accurate bill.

  2. Monitors medication order reports to assign medication to an automated dispensing machine. Delivers all medication in compliance with all DEA, DPH & State Board of Pharmacy regulations

  3. Prepares and delivers IV medications in accordance with Federal USP 797 & USP 800 standards. Maintains records pertaining to IV admixtures, maintains cleanliness in sterile areas, and completes QA.

  4. Repackages bulk supplies of medications in unit of use packaging in accordance with all Federal USP 795 & USP 800 standards.

  5. Checks for expired medications within the pharmacy & automated dispensing cabinets. Ensures that all expired/damaged medications are disposed of in accordance with RCRA, OSHA & NIOSH regulations.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED required.

  2. License Mass Registered Pharmacy Tech required., or Registration Pharmacy Technician Trainee required., and Certificate 1 EXCPT required., or Certificate 2 Pharm Tech Cert Board required., and CPhT for EXCPT or PTCB is required within 60 days of hire.

  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.

  4. Pharmacy Technicians must be licensed with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and certified through PTCB or EXCPT. Pharmacy Technicians in Training must become licensed with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and become certified through PTCB or ExCPT within 60 days of hire.

  5. Employee must remain in good standing with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Pharmacy including maintenance of registration and fees.

  6. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Three to six months as a Pharmacy Technician in a hosptial or retail setting.

  2. Has the ability to perform simple and complex pharmaceutical calculations. Develops familiarity with medications: their generic and trade names, methods of administration, and conversion between metric and apothecary systems

  4. Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
