Lab Support Supervisor (12:00PM-08:30PM) - Sign On Bonus Eligible!

Department Description:The Department of Pathology is involved with the diagnosis of cancer and other major medical conditions through the gross and microscopic examination of tissue samples obtained from surgical procedures and endoscopy (Anatomic Pathology).

Our department also provides clinical laboratory services to the hospital as well as consults in the areas of clinical chemistry, hematopathology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine (Clinical Pathology).

Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, the Department of Pathology conducts research in the further characterization of disease processes and trains the next generation of pathologists.


As part of an unprecedented organizational initiative, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is now offering up to $7,000 in sign on bonuses.


Bonuses are paid out within the first 30 days of employment and are subject to applicable taxes. Full time status at BIDMC is considered for schedules greater than or equal to 30 hours per week; part time status is 20 to 29 hours per week Please note, per diem employees are not eligible for sign on bonuses. Job Summary:Under the direction of the Lab Support Services Manager, the Lab Support Supervisor provides leadership and oversight to the Lab Control, Client Services and Reference Lab teams, including training, scheduling, assessment of competency, mentoring and evaluating staff. Supervisor maintains excellent communication and working relationships with staff and both internal and external clients.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervises operations in Lab Control and partners with Lab Support Leads to ensure adequate staffing and efficient, effective workflow for all sites (e.g., East Campus, West Campus and SCC), including meeting turnaround time expectations. Manages, directs and adjusts workflow as needed.

  • Serves as liaison between Lab Control and other departments.

  • Provides supervisory support to mentor, coach and guide as needed. Schedules vacation and processes payroll. Provides input for payroll and employee performance appraisals

  • Trains new employees and ensures ongoing competency for all employees. Participates in performance counseling for employees.

  • Leads by example and serves as a technical resource for any questions that arise in their areas of responsibility

  • Shares weekend 'manager on duty' rotation with other Lab Control leaders

  • Provides timely and effective communication to staff. Communicates any concerns to Manager and makes suggestions for resolution

  • Understands budget goals for department and shares responsibility for meeting those goals

  • Drives quality improvement initiatives, continuously looking for ways to improve performance and service. Participates in major projects including space planning, workflow redesign and department implementation of Laboratory Information System(s) in the area of expertise.

  • Maintains compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies including quality improvement training, safety compliance and competency in area of expertise

  • Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: 21-50

  • Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • 3-5 years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.


  • Decision Making:Ability to make decisions that are guided by precedents, policies and objectives. Regularly makes decisions and recommendations on issues affecting a department or functional area.

  • Problem Solving:Ability to address problems that are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring, requiring staff input, innovative, creative, and Lean diagnostic techniques to resolve issues.

  • Independence of Action:Ability to set goals and priorities for functional area. May make recommendations for department policies, practices and programs. Manager or Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.

  • Written Communications:Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas.

  • Oral Communications:Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situations, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others.

  • Knowledge:Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

  • Team Work:Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

  • Customer Service:Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
