The Lead Optometrist role will be working onsite at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.

Job Description:

Provides general and specialized eye care to patients within the full scope of Optometric practice. Works with Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmic Residents and other healthcare providers as a collaborative care provider in the co-management of patient care that affects eye health and vision. Serves as the liaison to the administrative and clinical management of the unit. Reports to the Chief of Ophthalmology and the Manager - Practice Operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides optometric evaluations with referral to an Ophthalmologist. Performs comprehensive eye exams, reviewing patient's history, selects and administers specialized tests and measurements, recommending and administering non-medical/surgical treatments. Designs and implements individual treatment programs and selects and applies corrective/therapeutic devices.

  • Provides emergency and triage ophthalmic care to patients, referring patients to an Ophthalmologist when the need for specialized care is appropriate. Records evaluations, diagnoses and treatment provided in patient medical record according to established documentation standards. Submits appropriate visit ticket information and prepares ad hoc reports as required.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of the unit quality improvement program. Assists in maintaining a safe and efficient examination and technical environment. Positively impacts patient/process flow.

  • Provides feedback on clinical performance to the Chief. Arranges continuing education opportunities for Optometry staff. Leads clinical quality initiatives for the unit. Participates in interview process for new Optometrists. Orients and trains new staff members. Takes a lead role in special projects that impact the Optometry services.

  • Provides patient support and education. Participates in interdisciplinary education programs of the unit/department and provides clinical precepting for new staff members, students, Residents and others. Participates in formal and informal peer review processes to improve the overall quality of Optometry practice. Supports clinical research and trials as required within the Division.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Optometry required.

  • License Optometrist required.

  • 3-5 years related work experience required.

  • Completion of an accredited Optometry training program.

  • Current licensure for the State of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Controlled Substance license to use and prescribe diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents in accordance with State regulations.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience in an Optometry practice.

  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

  • Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus
