Boston Public Schools Manager of Family and School Partnerships [Dever School] (SY22-23) in Boston, Massachusetts

*This school has been designated as a Level 5 school by the State of Massachusetts. This designation allows districts to utilize the new tools granted in the landmark education reform law that was passed in 2010 to provide additional services for these schools. Some of these tools will allow for extended time and extra compensation where needed. The Manager of Family and School Partnerships for Dever Elementary will coordinate strategies that enable family members to be full partners in their child’s education and connect students and families with community opportunities, resources, and supportive services. The day-to-day goal of the Manager of Family and School Partnerships is to coordinate and provide direct support to students and families. Using a holistic youth development and wraparound model of support, the Manager of Family, School and Community Partnerships will work as part of a team to understand student and family assets and needs and help to ensure that student development plans are coordinated across the classroom and the school, in the home, and in collaboration with community partners. The Dever Elementary School in Boston is a fully inclusive PK-6 school currently in state receivership and focused on transformation. This provides a unique and innovative environment for educators who are passionate about equity and working collaboratively with families and community partners to create powerful learning experiences for historically underserved students. The Manager’s position is a key role at the Dever and involves a high degree of internal and external collaboration. REPORTS TO: Principal RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with the school leadership team, family/caregivers, administrators, and classroom teachers to plan and carry out strategies that create a welcoming, inclusive and culturally affirming environment for all Dever families. Elevate the focus of family engagement so that collaboration with families is completely integrated into all classrooms and school settings. Establish school-wide practices and systems that support strong, consistent two-way communication strategies between staff and families/caregivers. Support school efforts to create a fully inclusive environment for learning; lead development of proactive strategies to build understanding about inclusion and inclusive practices with all families and strengthen collaboration between families and teachers. Identify strategies for celebrating the cultures and languages of Dever families in classroom and school activities. Collaborate with parent leaders, community organizations or groups, and other family-friendly points of connection who can help engage and support families from diverse backgrounds. Understand the landscape of opportunities and community services available to Dever students and families during the school-year and summer. Connect students, families, and teachers with resources. Develop and maintain relationships with school partners. Broker additional partnerships and services as needed. Coordinate communication; ensure partners, staff and families have the information they need to maximize partner support. Ensure partnerships are targeted and focused on student, family, and school priorities; track partnership effectiveness. Work proactively with student support staff to create effective student/family development plans that incorporate school-based, family/home and community supports. Engage family members as full partners in the student support process. Monitor the effectiveness of provider services. Develop and implement a strategy for cultivating and supporting family/caregiver and student leaders. Support collection of and analysis of data on school culture and perceptions of the school as a safe and supportive environment and welcoming environment (e.g., student, parent, staff surveys; data on effectiveness of supportive services/student support). Track indicators related to family engagement. Ensure families understand how the school operates and their rights related to their child’s education. Work with the school leadership team to plan and deliver professional development for staff within the domains of family partnership, family communication, and student and family support. Plan a regular calendar of meaningful activities that bring staff and families together to support, motivate, and celebrate Dever students and/or empower families, e.g., understanding the curriculum, child development, supporting learning at home, youth development opportunities Respond to concerns from families or teachers; work collaboratively to resolve issues using a holistic, supportive approach. Support the school registration process including outreach to families, coordination with Special Education staff on new referrals. Provide targeted support to families who need it, e.g., outreach to families of students with high absenteeism, newcomer families, students in DCF care Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education, school leadership, social work, or related field Minimum of 5 years experience in urban education, community organizing or social services 3-5 years experience working with immigrant communities Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred Commitment to growth mindset, strength-based youth development, and culturally responsive practice Experience developing positive, supportive relationships with students, teachers, families, and community partners Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Strong facilitation and technology skills to support in-person and online meetings, workshops, and family activities Knowledge of resources, community organizations and agencies providing services to families in Boston Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings and weekends based on school and family needs NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school in consultation with the Office of Student, Family and Community Advancement.School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.
