Over 12,000 homeless individuals are cared for by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program each year. Job Summary:

Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is looking for a Medical Assistant to provide medical office support and clinical support in both the administrative and clinical areas. Under the direction of the medical providers/registered nurse, performs a variety of appropriately delegated patient care interventions for patients and their families.

Hours:  Full time, 40 hours per week, potential for some early evenings     

Responsibilities:

Clinical Support:              

  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to determine appropriate work assignment and priorities. Communicates status of delegated task completion as well as outcome of patient data findings to the appropriate staff member

  • Act as a member of the team of care givers; treats patient in a manner that preserves and supports patient confidentiality, patient rights, and patient’s dignity; maintains timely ongoing verbal communication to assure good patient care and the effective running of the Clinic.

  • Accurately collects requested patient data (e.g. vital signs, weights and reason for visits), notifying the supervising RN of abnormalities; responsible for collecting, collating, and entering data and information into the applicable database or format in an accurate and timely manner; maintains appropriate equipment logs and records per standards.

  • Performs basic patient testing, including, but not limited to, tests for guaiac, urine dip, and glucose fingerstick; collects, labels, and sends specimens to the lab, with appropriate laboratory slips and/or requisitions.

  • Assists nurses, providers, and MAs during complex treatments/procedures, including but not limited to preps and set-ups for examinations or treatments; check inventories, re-stock as needed; maintain appropriate equipment logs and records.

  • Attend all-staff Family Team meetings, clinic specific monthly meetings, and daily huddles (where applicable)

  • Answer phones appropriately as needed; support and attend in-service education as required

    Clerical Support:

  • Answers phones, provides front desk support, as needed.

  • Confirms and communicates patient appointments to patients and staff.

  • Assists with the scheduling of follow up appointments and new appointment consultations, as needed.

  • Maintain clinic files, patient records.

  • Performs other duties, as needed.

    Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a Certified Medical Assistant program

  • Life support training certification (e.g. CPR, BLS, ACLS)

  • Previous experience and/or education in the areas of pregnancy, childbirth, growth & development is desired

  • Adult and pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred   

  • Bilingual Spanish or Haitian creole preferred

  • Administrative experience preferred

  •  Basic medical terminology and abbreviations

  • Vital signs

  • Computer skills preferred, including MS Office, EPIC

  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier, etc.)

  • Proficient reading and writing skills in English

    Compensation and Benefits:

  • The compensation starts at $22.00 per hour and increases based on years of experience.

  • BHCHP full time employees are eligible for our competitive time off policy of 4 weeks’ vacation, health, dental and vision insurance, 403B retirement savings plan and employer retirement contribution, and pre-tax MBTA pass program with 40% discount. In addition, eligible employees will receive yearly increases, additional compensation of seven thousand five hundred added to your base hiring rate for demonstrated bilingual proficiency and the opportunity to work with local hospitals and community health centers.
