Boston Properties Network Administrator in Boston, Massachusetts

Primary Purpose of Position:

The position serves as an integral member of a collaborative and hands-on technical team based in Boston in primarily supporting BXP’s properties on the west coast (Los Angeles/San Francisco/Seattle). The position is responsible for the administration of an extensive network infrastructure serving BXP’s information and operational technology needs (IT/OT) and supports capital investment and development projects dependent on network services. The BXP includes over 180 locations, 10,000+ active endpoints, and dynamic routing (BGP & EIGRP) with redundant active/active routing.

Essential Functions

  • Daily monitoring and correlation of platform logs and events. Conduct discovery and research on relevant events.

  • Investigate faults, troubleshoot and respond to day-to-day incidents involving network infrastructure and dependent technologies.

  • Provision and maintain telecom circuits, interfacing with cabling contractors and coordinating deliverables with service providers and maintain quality of service for broadband connectivity across all locations.

  • Provide support for dependent application and datacenter infrastructure integration technologies.

  • Installs, configures and supports network equipment including routers, proxy servers, switches, access points, WAN accelerators, DNS and DHCP.

  • Participates in meetings with critical stakeholders, construction managers, serving as subject matter expert for a variety of new construction, acquisition and renovation-related projects

  • Participates in the design and implementation of new network solutions and/or improving the efficiency of current networks. Assist with procurement of network equipment and manage subcontractors involved with network installation.

  • Configure firewalls, routing and switching to maximize network efficiency and security.

  • Maximize network performance through ongoing monitoring and troubleshooting.

  • Arranging scheduled upgrades. Update network equipment to the latest firmware releases.

  • Reporting network infrastructure deliverables status to key stakeholders. Document change management and access process controls.

  • Support the installation of network infrastructure for the integration, maintenance and security of building management systems.

  • Conduct research on new technologies and products.

  • Coordinate project planning & implementation activities with Application Development, Technical Support Services & regional IT teams.

  • Integrate activities with other business units to ensure the successful implementation and support of project efforts.

  • Conduct both one-on-one instruction and group training sessions.

    Technologies:

    The incumbent will need to be familiar with the following technologies and their independencies in delivering services:

  • Network Management (SolarWinds or comparable) and SIEM

  • Cisco Switches (IOS & NX-OS) and Routers (ISR & ASR)

  • Cisco Meraki Access Points (MR), Switches (MS), and Security Appliances (MX)

  • Palo Alto (Panorama) Firewalls, VPN gateways

  • Microsoft Windows Servers and Azure IaaS

  • Security Solutions – Cisco ISE, Forescout NAC, Rapid7, CrowdStrike Endpoint AV

    Non-Essential Functions

  • Special projects as assigned.

    Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a technology focused concentration strongly preferred.

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of progressively responsible experience supporting datacenter & network infrastructure, including experience with the day-to-day support of complex, enterprise-class, geographically distributed networks.

  • Must possess a strong working knowledge of Cisco CLI, Meraki and/or Palo Alto (Panorama). Familiarity with RADIUS and VPN platforms.

  • CCNA or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Working knowledge of traditional telecommunications (MPLS, PRI, broadband), cellular and SD-WAN technologies

  • Proven ability to provide telephone-based and in-person support for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Proven ability to interact with all levels of employees.

  • Demonstrated commitment to and proficiency in customer service culture. Possess a service orientation and attitude in working with others.

  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively, independently, and as part of a team is essential.

  • Ability and interest to maintain a flexible approach to both “doing the work” and “managing the work” across multiple technologies and platforms.

  • Ability to multi-task and strong project management skills.

  • Be detail-oriented and methodical in solving problems and managing multiple projects.

  • Possess an aptitude toward learning technical concepts. Be results-oriented and a quick learner in supporting new products and technologies.

  • Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with employees and contractors.

  • Ability to affectively coordinate resources and participate in multiple projects in a cross-functional environment.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.

    Travel

  • Requires quarterly travel to the West Coast region and periodic travel to other regions in support of larger development projects or strategic corporate initiatives.

  • Willingness to work flexible schedules outside normal business hours when required.

    Physical Requirements

  • Involves work of a general office nature usually performed sitting such as operation of a computer.

  • Involves work of a general office nature usually performed standing such as operation of a fax and printer.

  • Involves movement between departments to facilitate work.

  • Involves lifting, racking and stacking of networking hardware as well as attendant cabling. Must be able to lift 30lbs.

    Internal and External Contacts

    This position regularly interacts in both verbal and written form with employees, vendors and contractors of BXP.

    Reporting Structure

    This position reports to the Manager of Network Services who provides supervision and guidance, and coordinates, evaluates, and monitors work performance on a periodic basis but is also accountable to the regional Director of Information Systems, West Coast.
