State of Massachusetts OTA Environmental Justice Intern in Boston, Massachusetts

Brief Description of Internship Position:

TheMassachusetts Office of Technical Assistance (OTA)is a statewide agency that was created by theToxics Use Reduction Act (TURA)to provide free and confidential pollution prevention and toxics use reduction assistance to Massachusetts businesses. Many businesses that use toxic chemicals are located in environmental justice communities. The OTA Environmental Justice intern will work with the Director and supporting staff to identify opportunities and create a strategic plan for OTA to better serve environmental justice communities as well as minority-owned businesses.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervised by the OTA Director and working with supporting staff, the Environmental Justice intern will assist OTA in marketing and delivering their toxics use reduction services and resources to the environmental justice community through identifying potential partners and businesses and developing outreach and educational materials. The Environmental Justice intern will also assist OTA in creating a strategic plan to approach and engage with the environmental justice community and minority-owned businesses.Although the candidate may occasionally be asked to report to the office at 100 Cambridge Street, Boston, this position will primarily be working remotely.


  • Identifying minority-owned businesses that would benefit from OTA assistance and assist in creating an OTA office wide outreach plan. Activities include:

o Identifying businesses and trade associations and adding them to OTA databases

o Assessing specific industry needs

o Creating outreach materials

o Assisting staff with setting up company site visits

  • Identifying environmental justice groups, economic development corporations, community groups, nonprofits or others with which to partner. Activities include:

o Identifying partners and adding them to OTA databases

o Setting up one on one meetings between OTA and groups

o Requesting to be added to meeting agendas or webinars to discuss OTA services

o Assisting OTA in finding an environmental justice representative for the TURA Advisory Committee

Assisting with the development of an outreach plan that targets toxics users in communities vulnerable to climate change events and severe weather, aligned withOTA’s Chemical Safety and Climate Change Resiliency Program. Activities include:

o Using OTA’s climate change map and other resources to identify priority focus areas

o Offering OTA services to MassachusettsMunicipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP)grantees and climate change groups, including:

  • Accepting site visit referrals from boards of health, fire departments, community groups, and others

  • Offering to recruit businesses to engage with municipal, and other entities, climate change efforts

  • Communicate findings and making recommendations to OTA staff throughout the process and at the end of the internship. Activities include:

o Making presentations to OTA staff

o Assist with development of outreach plans and materials

o Assist with data collection and analysis

o Identifying resources that will help OTA better deliver services to the environmental justice community and minority-owned businesses

o Participating in theNortheast Waste Management Officials Association (NEWMOA)interstate environmental justice work group

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Comfortable making presentations in person or on webinars

  • Comfortable making cold calls and overall good phone skills

  • Data analysis and strong general analytical skills

  • Comfortable navigating MS Excel files

  • Comfortable Familiarity with databases, such as Hubspot and Microsoft Access

  • Familiarity with GIS

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn about the health and environmental impacts of toxics
