The Brain Plasticity and Neuroimaging Laboratory at Boston University School of Medicine is seeking applicants for the position of Post-doctoral Candidate. The position will involve working on projects related to our studies investigating the impact of racism burden and resilience factors on brain outcomes and mental health in Black emerging adults aged 18 to 25 years. The position will involve community outreach and recruitment, collection of MRI, cognitive, and allostatic load biomarker data, performing cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity assessments, as well as data analysis, data presentation and write-up. Opportunities to write individual training grants and supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate student research assistants, including those from groups underrepresented in STEM fields, are available to the candidate.

CORE DUTIES IN DETAIL:

  • Community outreach, recruitment, informed consent, and screening of research participants from local area colleges and universities for eligibility

  • Collecting functional and structural MRI and biomarker data

  • Submaximal fitness testing and sensor-based physical activity monitoring

  • Analyzing functional and structural MRI, cognitive task data, biomarker data, and survey data

  • Statistical modeling

  • Perform or assist with routine procedures, such as maintaining the study database, maintaining physical activity sensors, biomarker processing, survey data review.

Required Skills

Education & Experience:

A PhD in psychology (e.g., health, social or cognitive psychology), cognitive or social neuroscience, public health, exercise physiology, kinesiology or a related scientific field is required. Human subjects research experience, especially working with diverse populations and/or cardiorespiratory fitness testing in healthy adults and/or experience with functional and structural MRI data collection and processing is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience with some of the following is expected:

  • Functional and structural MRI data analysis methods, such as AFNI, FSL, SPM, Freesurfer

  • Cognitive task development and cognitive testing

  • Biomarkers for allostatic load

  • Statistical modeling, such as Structural Equation Modeling

  • Submaximal treadmill testing to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness and/or sensor-based physical activity monitoring

  • Knowledge of social determinants of health

  • Ability to work comfortably with a diverse research team

  • Community engagement
