State of Massachusetts Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor (A/B) in Boston, Massachusetts
The Metro Boston Mental Health Units of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital are seeking qualified candidates to fill the part-time position of Rehabilitation Counselor. The ideal candidate will be a talented, compassionate, and experienced rehab professional. Note: This is a part-time position, 24 hours per week with schedule as follows: Friday 12:30-9:00PM; Saturday and Sunday 8:00AM-4:30PM. _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): _ * Work collaboratively with Rehab Team and Multi-disciplinary Team to plan, organize, facilitate, and evaluate skill building groups and activities for patients living with severe and persistent mental illness. * Provides rehabilitative and recreational therapy groups and individual sessions on an assigned unit and within rehab programs which promote goals of recovery, wellness and transition to community based independent living. * In collaboration with supervisors identifies a variety of skill building group and activity needs including leisure planning, recreational, and community transition that are based on recovery principles. * Provides rehabilitation programming for MBMHU and for assigned unit after 4:30 p.m. on weekday, weekend day shifts and some holidays. * Assists with all aspects of rehabilitation including teaching skills or facilitating groups which assist patients with improving functional abilities, improving social skills, developing independent living skills, and exploring vocational interests * Coordinates with rehab department staff and nursing staff to ensure that groups are organized, attended, and consistently held. * Informs staff and patients verbally and through written schedules and notices of all activities both on and off the unit. * Collaboratively organize and implement community trips, holiday activities, and special events. * Attends rounds and other relevant meetings as assigned to learn of and to share patient progress. * Monitor and evaluate client progress by completing documentation as required. * Evaluates need for and requests materials and supplies. * Drives van for leisure/recreational activities and for community field trips. * Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care, sensitive to the age-related and cultural needs of this patient population. _Required Qualifications:_ * Understanding of the principles and technique of recovery & rehabilitation. * Knowledge of the types of uses of reference sources for occupational information. * Comprehension of the types and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders. * Proficiency in the methods of general report writing. * Knowledge of the methods and techniques of vocational education for Vocational Rehabilitation. * Capacity to analyze and determine the applicability of data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Ability to gather information through direct questioning and observation of individuals. * Propensity to gather information by examining records and documents. * Aptitude to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. * Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise understandable manner. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Experience with and enthusiasm for working with adults living with severe and persistent mental illness. * Prefer candidates who have completed academic requirements for and can be certified as Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist, Expressive Therapists, Music Therapist, or other professional Rehabilitation Counseling degree/licensure. * Excellent organizational and writing skills. * Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrated effective communication skills. * Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to drive 15 passenger van. * Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency. _Hospital Mission:_ At the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, we take pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The DMH units within the Hospital provide inpatient psychiatric services to adults with serious mental illness with the goal of enhancing autonomy, safety and return to the community. Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team, led by attending psychiatrists which also includes psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, peer specialists, occupational therapists and rehabilitative staff specializing in vocational, recreational and expressive therapies. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or paraprofessional experience in social work, social casework, vocational counseling, employment counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or educational counseling. SUBSTITUTIONS: - A Bachelor's or higher degree in rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience. - A Bachelor's or higher degree in a major other than rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience on the basis of four years of education for one year of experience. - Licensure as a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health Professionals or Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification may be substituted for the required experience. - One year of education equals 30 semester hours.
