State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse IV - Patient Safety Specialist - Risk Management in Boston, Massachusetts

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) is seeking a caring and attentive Patient Safety Specialist (Registered Nurse IV) for the Risk Management Department at the hospital campus in Jamaica Plain. The Patient Safety Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hospital-wide Quality and Risk Management Program. The incumbent in this role will provide strong customer service, conduct investigations, review risk analysis incidents, and monitor occurrence reports. In addition, the Patient Safety Specialist assumes the responsibility for the Risk Management Program in the absence of the Director of Patient Safety. _Please Note:_ This position is 40 hours per week, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The days off are Saturday and Sunday. _Duties and Responsibilities (These duties are a general summary and not__*all inclusive):* * Demonstrates a strong customer service focus and excellence in the practice. * Assumes responsibility for the Risk Management Program in the absence of the Director of Patient Safety. * Reviews calls to the Risk Hot Line daily. * Analyzes and verifies accuracy of information of incident occurrence reports to determine need for further investigation and maintains strict confidentiality. * Identifies and/or assists with investigation of serious quality of care and/or potential liability issues for the hospital. * Independently prepares reports and formats case reviews identifying areas of concern * Is an active participant in Proactive Risk Assessment, Event Reviews including but not limited to Root Cause Analysis, and Peer Review sessions delineated in Quality Management procedures and by Hospital Policy and Procedure. * Conducts hospital-wide Risk Management Orientation and other training for the Quality Management Department. * Independently creates reports to DPH HealthCare Quality, DPPC, FDA, BORIM, EOHHS and other regulatory agencies as needed identifying specific of incidents that meet reporting requirements. *Required Qualifications:* * Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing. Two years medical/surgical experience in the past 5 years preferred. * Ability to gather clinical information through observing and questioning individuals, examining, and reviewing patient charts, lab data and other documents. * Ability to analyze and determine applicability of medical data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Knowledge of the methods of general report writing. * Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain the provisions of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing risk management activities. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Two years of acute medical/surgical experience over the last three years is preferred. * Demonstrates expertise in analysis, decision making, time management, oral and written communication. * Capacity to possess strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in demanding situations. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications including Excel, Access, Outlook, and Word. *About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:* Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 260 inpatient beds including 115 Psychiatric beds and 28 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Sub Oxone clinic serving 200 patients.
