Research Assistant I

Department Description:Established in 1995 as the second such center in the United States, the BIDMC Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Center is dedicated to the development and clinical application of CMR applications to the cardiovascular system. These include the use of CMR for the assessment of biventricular function/volumes/mass, valvular function, myocardial viability/infarction, coronary artery integrity and detection of subclinical atherosclerosis. Our center is looking for a research assistant to assist in ongoing research projects including cardiac MR image analysis, patient recruitment, medical record data collection and outcome data collection. Background in biomedical engineering, computer science is desired.

Job Summary:Under supervision of the principal investigator, conducts research in cardiovascular MRI, including cardiac MR image acquisition and reconstruction techniques, image analysis and motion correction. Background in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science is desired. A strong background in signal processing is REQUIRED for this position.

Department Specific Job Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts image analysis of patients with cardiovascular disease

  2. Researches and collects basic study data through online medical records

  3. Assist in patient recruitment and consenting for various ongoing clinical studies in cardiac MR center

  4. May write standard operating procedures for documentation and make informal presentations of these procedures to others in the lab.

  5. Performs literature searches and library investigations as they relate to the research and/or as assigned

  6. Due to the dynamic environment in which research exists, must show flexibility in performing principal duties and responsibilities as research projects evolve.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related field required.

  2. 0-1 years related work experience required.

Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments and equipment, computers (databases, spreadsheets, statistics) and scientific procedures.

  1. Basic familiarity with computers; Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

  • Oral Communications:Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.

  • Knowledge:Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.

  • Team Work:Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.

  • Customer Service:Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
