Sonos Senior Manufacturing Development Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts
At Sonos we want to create the ultimate listening experience for our customers and know that it starts by listening to each other. As part of the Sonos team, you’ll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives.
This is a hybrid role, given the hands-on nature of this position, a combination of office based (2-3 days per week) in our Boston office. That said, we are focused on intentional flexibility with how we work in recognition of our individual needs and preferences.
As a Senior Manufacturing Development Engineer on our Tooling and Manufacturing Engineering team, you will be starting with early engagement during the creation phase of programs and continuing through to product realization, working with Product Development teams based in the US as we develop new product concepts. Your focus during this period will be to use SW tools and other analyses to input design for excellence (design for assembly, manufacturability & serviceability) ideas into appearance models and sub-system architectures. You will also identify & assess any new-to-Sonos (NUD) manufacturing methods required to manufacture these products. Progressing through the prototyping phase, you will work with other Ops Engineering teams to develop the manufacturing processes needed at second tier supplier and contract manufacturer partners based in China. Your charter during this period is to make equipment recommendations, ensure robust DFM solutions and advocate for methods and machinery to ensure critical-to-quality product features are provided. You will lead the development of NUD manufacturing processes from proof-of-concept through process qualification.. Finally, during the realization and launch phases, you will assist our global repair and refurbishment 3rd party partners to develop their dis-assembly & reassembly processes in order to process RMA returns at the quality levels that Sonos expects. Ranging from supplier sub-assembly to CM final product assembly to 3P repair & refurbishment, these manufacturing solutions will support growing high volume demand with uncompromising accuracy, repeatability and efficiency. You will care passionately about product quality and functionality, and if you’re a music lover that’s all the better!
What You’ll Do:

You work closely with Product Development teams to ensure design for excellence (DFX) as new products are conceived and architected.
You are able to conceive and architect complex assembly jigs & fixturing to achieve seamless alignment of design critical parts.
You are working closely with suppliers and local engineering teams to develop efficient and repeatable assembly processes, with proficient skills in the areas of adhesives, plastic-welding, screw driving.
You are identifying opportunities for assembly automation and other process efficiencies.
The sub-assembly and final assembly processes you have developed maintain exceptionally high yields in mass production.
You have built highly effective partnerships with China based manufacturing and supplier-based engineering teams enabling almost seamless introduction into manufacturing of Sonos products.
You are building and maintaining relationships with key integrators and suppliers to bring innovative assembly solutions to product development teams whether they are needed now or for advanced development.
Your extensive knowledge and experience allows for mechanical design partners to have accurate predictions of realistic assembly tolerances between assembled parts.
As an expert in assembly process development, you are mentoring other team members.
