VMware Senior Software Engineer - Java Backend - Networking - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Boston, Massachusetts

No matter where providers are in their cloud services delivery journey, you will play a critical role in developing software from VMware that can help them unlock new markets, up-level their offerings, and delight their customers. More specifically, the Cloud Director team needs a new senior software developer to join an existing full stack development team focused on delivering advanced networking solutions for this key product.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within your first 3 months

• You will be expected to learn about VMware Cloud Director, and the underlying NSX, and vSphere products which collectively are the main integration points for the VCD product.

  • You will be expected to learn the range of tools and technologies we are using - both third party and internal, the development process we follow and the quality standards we have in place.

• You will likely be assigned a networking feature or subdomain area to start to become more deeply familiar with, both from a design and implementation perspective.

• You will learn about different communication forums and interact with fellow developers in order to collaborate on the development of new functionalities.

After 6 months+

  • You will be responsible for collaborating and contributing to the design, implementation, testing and support of networking related features in Cloud Director. This will involve working cross-functionally with User Experience, Technical Writers, Performance and Scale Testing Teams.

  • Depending on the scope and complexity, you may be tasked with leading a small feature team in the delivery of a specific networking feature, working closely with the Technical Lead/Architect.

  • You will be participating in regular forums with fellow Cloud Networking Developers, Product Management and other external stakeholders to share your work and provide feedback for the work of other teams

  • You will regularly complete timely code reviews to ensure a consistent developer standards for the team.

  • You will be able to participate in Global Innovation initiatives to enable the next great ideas for Cloud Director and VMware which will help our customers and their journey to the modern cloud.

Skills & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or equivalent technical training

  • 6+ years of commercial software development

  • Significant experience coding in Java or other Object-oriented languages

  • Significant experience working with SQL and relational databases

  • You have strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to:Become a subject matter expert in a particular area or domainWork independently but know when to engage with senior technical team members


  • Large scale web-enabled distributed systems

  • Server-side Java technologies such as Spring and Hibernate frameworks

  • Previous experience with API-level configuration of Networking services, and a sound knowledge/understanding of Networking virtualization.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You will be joining the VMware Cloud Director (vCD) R&D team. Cloud Director is in the core of VMware Cloud Provider Program (VCPP) which enables the business of thousands of Cloud Providers. Those Cloud Providers all vary in scale, business model and portfolio, but together they form one of the biggest clouds today which is comparable to those of the industry giants such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft. The team consists of more than 130 engineers spread across different scrum teams each representing a significant part of Cloud Director such as Compute and Storage, Networking, Multitenancy, Extensibility, etc. The global team is spread throughout VMware offices including Palo Alto, Boston, Sofia and India.

The Networking team is comprised of sub-teams in Boston, Sofia (Bulgaria), and Bangalore(India). The Senior Manager, Technical Lead, and Product Manager are located in the US. The Boston team is responsible for the core networking aspects of the product and has some of the most senior backend developers. The Sofia team specializes in UI development, and the India team is a newer full stack team that currently focuses on the Advanced Load Balancer area of the product.

Where is this role located?

Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within a reasonable non-daily commute of the office.
