VMware Senior Software Engineer - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Boston, Massachusetts

The elevator pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

You are share a passion for addressing challenges VMware’s Digital Asset/Source Code Management (SCM) team is the custodian of VMware’s source code assets. As a strategic arm of our Engineering Services Organization, our SCM Engineers play a critical role in VMware’s development infrastructure and in collaboration with Information security to protect out intellectual property. Our engineers also provide hands-on technical guidance with design and deployment related activities, perform code reviews, and prevent, analyze, root cause & resolve technical issues.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • You will have automated tasks related to management of our services.

  • You will have learned how to manage containers and VMs in an enterprise environment.

  • You will have committed code changes and code reviews.

  • You will have established yourself as a trusted service provider to product development and partner with Security.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within your first 6 months

  • You will have become familiar with VMware source code services

  • You will have automated tasks related to management of our services.

  • You will have learned how to manage containers and VMs in an enterprise environment.

After 6 months+ You will have established yourself as a trusted service provider to product development and partner with Security

  • You will have established yourself as the subject matter expert with administration of VMware’s source code systems

  • You will have proposed solutions to complex challenges

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or similar technical field strongly preferred.

  • 4+ years in Software Engineering or DevOps role

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of Python (preferred), GoLang, C/C++, Java

  • Self-motivated, independent, and works well within and across functional teams.

  • Experience working in a modern Linux environment

  • Experience in modern CI/CD technologies such as Jenkins, Maven, Hudson, CircleCI, etc.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This position reports to the Director of the Source Code Management Team (aka “SCM Team”), an experienced software engineer and manager who joined VMware in 2010. The team consists of highly competent engineers. We focus on iterative development, both of software and our software development practices.

You will initially be part an established team that has a wide range of responsibilities, spanning the entire software stack including managing a dedicated virtual environment. This is a great opportunity for someone who likes a broad range of responsibilities and is comfortable in providing high availability services relied upon by the your colleagues

The team culture is one based on sharing knowledge for ongoing development, building trust and participating in social events along with giving back to the community through service learning.

Where is the role located?
