Job Description

Objective:

Synthetic Molecule Process Development (SMPD) is responsible for the development of robust and cost-effective processes for the manufacture of new small molecule pharmaceuticals, along with methods for achieving and controlling high standards of purity and quality.

The Staff Engineer – Advanced Sensor Technologies will be joining a vibrant and innovative group of engineers and scientists, responsible for:

  • Designing, building and implementing sensor technologies to solve existing and emerging measurement requirements for ongoing and planned processes

  • Working with project teams to interface with manufacturing and drive the implementation of PAT to realize a paradigm shift to data rich manufacturing and enabling automation

  • Serving as a subject matter expert on interdisciplinary departmental and cross-functional workstreams and work to democratize PAT across the global SMPD function

  • Staying current on emerging trends, new technologies, and external communities & consortia related to, e.g., novel metrology techniques - particularly for liquid and powders

Accountabilities:

  • Assists in the development of end-to-end control strategies & systems for drug substance synthetic molecule continuous manufacturing processes.

  • Works with cross-functional and/or external partners to develop and deploy next generation sensor solutions.

  • Develops a modular plug & play sensor architecture.

  • Independently designs and executes experiments for validation of novel sensor technologies.

  • Partners with Automation, Manufacturing, Process Engineers & PAT experts to develop metrology solutions that are deployable across the global organization for the measurement and/or detection of quantities of interest in drug substance manufacturing.

  • Enables automation technology projects with the development and application of appropriate measurement solutions.

  • Assists with the development of project strategy and communicates complex technologies within the department and cross functionally as necessary.

  • Builds and maintains relationships with key vendors and assists with technical aspects of vendor negotiations.

  • Responsible for authoring relevant sections of regulatory documents, reports and peer reviewed manuscripts.

  • Proactively analyses technical issues and coordinates potential resolution with team members.

Education, Experience, and Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Physics, Chemometrics, Chemical or Electrical Engineering or related pharmaceutical science and 8+ years relevant industry experience

  • Masters degree in Physics, Chemometrics, Chemical Engineering or related pharmaceutical science 6+ years relevant industry experience

  • PhD in Physics, Chemical Engineering or related pharmaceutical science and 0+ years relevant industry experience

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of optical and electronic metrology techniques

  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus, OPCUA etc.

  • Experienced with communicating and data collection from systems such as sensors, controllers, and industrial systems

  • Good knowledge of the state of the art in existing PAT a plus

  • Experience with Matlab/Python/R/SQL a plus

  • Experience in multivariate analysis and/or statistical and/or mechanistic and/or deep learning methodologies a plus

  • Understanding of synthetic molecule process development activities a plus

  • Understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) a plus

  • Knowledge Sharing - Ability to capture organizational knowledge; improve solutions, processes, and deliverables through use of information; improve information capital by contributing experience, theories, deliverables, and models for others to use

  • Resource Management - Ability to manage one’s time within individual, departmental, and corporate goals and timelines; management of internal and external resources (vendors)

  • External Involvement - Demonstrated involvement in professional community evidenced by presentation of scientific posters or lectures at professional conferences or events

  • Technical - Subject matter expertise and knowledge of applicable lab equipment and operations

Travel Requirements:

May require approximately 5-10% travel

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$108,500.00 - $170,500.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
