Job Summary

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute (HPHCI) is currently seeking a highly motivated, action-oriented, and resourceful Senior Platform Engineer to join the Division of Therapeutics Research and Infectious Disease Epidemiology (TIDE). TIDE sits within Harvard Medical School’s Department of Population Medicine (www.populationmedicine.org), leading large, complex, multi-institutional research initiatives that support major national public health activities. Our mission is to improve health care delivery and population health through research and education, in partnership with health plans, delivery systems, and public health agencies. The Senior Platform Engineer will report into the Senior Director, Informatics and will be responsible for supporting the modernization and consolidation of TIDE’s infrastructure to automate workloads and pursue next-generation innovation. The Senior Platform Engineer will leverage their experience and expertise to develop the strategy, design, and implementation of CI/CD pipelines for cloud-native applications, as well as large-scale projects hosted in either AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform. The Senior Platform Engineer will collaborate with multiple teams at TIDE to improve our operations and the performance, security, and scalability of our cloud infrastructure to ensure the success of our research portfolio.

Key Responsibilities/Duties – what you will be doing

  • Work collaboratively with our engineering teams including Point32Health IT to identify and implement the most optimal cloud-based solutions for TIDE.

  • Define and document best practices and strategies regarding application deployment and infrastructure maintenance.

  • Ensure best security practices are followed in accordance with Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) or any other applicable guidelines and that appropriate documentation is maintained.

  • Design and implement cloud infrastructure solutions that meet our business requirements and align with our TIDE’s strategy and research portfolio needs.

  • Stay current with emerging cloud technologies in the healthcare domain, work closely with informatics researchers to test innovations in the field and their potential adoption in TIDE’s operations and research activities, and evaluate their applicability to the organization's cloud landscape.

  • Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale while maintaining high standards for code quality and thoughtful design.

  • Oversee routine security audits and implement cloud security policies and best practices to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with security standards and regulations.

  • Guide and coach the more junior engineers on the team as they grow in their skills and gain experience within the Cloud Engineering space.

  • Provide technical leadership in the deployment and operational management of cloud solutions.

  • Design and maintain the Cloud provisioning templates required for building and managing our Cloud platforms while adhering to our Point32Health Security, Compliance, and Performance standards and policies.

  • Create data transfer and storage standard operating procedures and policy documentation while adhering to industry standards and best practices.

  • Design and maintain the CI/CD pipelines for building and managing our cloud-native applications while adhering to our Point32Health Security, Compliance, and Performance standards and policies.

  • Design, build, and deploy Cloud applications, including large-scale data processing, computationally intensive statistical modeling, and advanced analytics.

  • Participate in all aspects of the SDLC for Cloud solutions, including planning, requirements, development, testing, and quality assurance.

  • Troubleshoot incidents, identify root causes, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.

  • Educate teams on the implementation of new cloud-based initiatives, providing associated training when necessary.

  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation for all automated processes.

  • Work closely with Prod and Non-Prod environment owners to develop and maintain a role-based workflow that supports segregated duties.

  • Oversee and support Production deployments during major release activities for components owned by the Cloud Engineering team.

  • Serve as SME (subject matter expert) for new and existing research programs to recommend cost effective and scalable solutions.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications – what you need to perform the job

Education, Certification and Licensure:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., TOGAF, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Certified Architect) are a plus.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Cloud Engineering or DevOps role with knowledge of AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud platforms.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading large projects and small teams.

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong leadership including ability to influence others, work independently and exercise appropriate judgment in decision making.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of business analysts, developers, data scientists, and subject matter experts.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with management, peers, and the other departments within IT.

  • Respect for change management, environmental integrity, and process workflow within a relatively new and rapidly maturing organization.

  • Strong analytical and technical ability including strength in general issue troubleshooting.

  • Understanding of and experience with the five pillars of a well-architected framework

  • Ability to quickly learn TIDE’s specific processes, topology, tools often with limited documentation.

  • Technical experience with the following: OS Level Administration (Linux, Windows), IaC Provisioning Tools (Terraform, ARM, Ansible, CloudFormation), Software development lifecycle principles, Build Orchestration Tools (Jenkins, Bamboo, etc.)

  • Preferred experience with deployment Tools (CD/RO, Ansible, Azure DevOps, etc.) and Source Control Management (GitHub, SVN, BitBucket, etc.)

  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or JavaScript.

  • Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices architecture.

  • Preferred experience with federal government agency operations and compliance (FISMA, FEDRAMP, NIST controls, etc.)

  • Familiarity with DevOps principles and CI/CD tools like CloudBees/Jenkins, GitLab, or GitHub Actions.

Working Conditions and Additional Requirements :

  • Must be able to work under normal office conditions and work from home as required.

  • Work may require simultaneous use of a telephone/headset and PC/keyboard and sitting for extended durations.

  • May be required to work additional hours beyond standard work schedule.
