The Sr. Underwriting Director will assist the head of wholesale excess casualty in strategic planning to develop and implement an underwriting strategy that identifies profitable market opportunities and new product development. Responsibilities will include multiple facets of the Wholesale Excess business, as well as provide leadership for various projects of critical strategic importance, including oversight for pricing strategy, referral underwriting authority, implementation of underwriting guidelines, quality control, and training. He/ she will also build and manage an individual, profitable book of new and renewal excess casualty business for the division.


  • Responsible for the performance of an individual book of wholesale excess casualty business including assisting the head of excess casualty with the overall performance of the portfolio. Recommends objectives and plans to achieve growth and financial profitability for existing segment products and new emerging opportunities.

  • Coordinates with the CUO and regional leaders to implement and monitor underwriting policy, develop communicate new practices and processes, assist field personnel in understanding corporate policy and provide technical expertise and counsel to field staff.

  • Acts as SME and central point of contact for various initiatives including cross sell, training, etc. for the Wholesale Team, including published underwriting content (i.e. manual, bulletins, articles) is implemented by this underwriting leader.

  • Takes an active role in building on existing broker relationships to increase production sources and identify profitable market opportunities. Maintains and develops new relationships with brokers and reinsurers. Communicates effectively and persuasively with agents/brokers on underwriting issues including, but not limited to, decisions on cancellations, declinations, exposure concerns, coverage approaches.

  • Ensures that underwriting strategies supporting profitable growth (execution on underwriting, risk selection, compliance, etc.) are consistently followed throughout the assigned underwriting teams including passing underwriting audits.

  • Interfaces effectively with other business units within the company, including operations, claims, and actuarial, to improve overall results and profitability.

  • Ensures the use of best practices and compliance with all company practices and policies. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • 15+ years of experience in underwriting, marketing, and management of underwriting with an emphasis in wholesale excess casualty

  • Extensive relationships with wholesale brokers

  • Entrepreneurial; ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Prior leadership experience managing a team

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • High energy and positive demeanor

  • BS/BA degree required; Master’s degree and/or insurance designation a plus.

  • Ability to travel as needed.


The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$196,560 - $294,840
